|

Hi folks:
I will be visiting Southport at the end of May and would like to visit the following places where my Spencer relatives either lived or worked. Can anyone kindly tell me if the buildings are still standing.
1. 7 Union Street - where Thomas Spencer (b.1857) lived with his family.
2. Zion Baptist Church on St. Luke's Road - Richard Spencer (b1833) was a founder.
3. 25 Mount St. - again where Thomas lived
4. Where on Botanic Road is St. Cuthberts Church - Rev. John Mawdesley is in my family line.
5. Where on Duke St. is the plaque for William Sutton, the Old Duke.
If anyone can help me out, it might save me precious time running around to find that these place are no long exist.
Thanks so much for any help.
Cheers, Bobbie

4 - St Cuthbert's Church is next to The Hesketh Pub
5 - It is at the end of Lord Street - there is a roundabout and walking from town the plaque is on the wall on the left
Not sure about the other buildings you ask about but you could go on Google maps. Look at Satellite and you might get an idea of Southport

Thanks for the replies, Jane and Dotty.
Yes, Dotty, we are related! Jenny Spencer's grandfather, Thomas Spencer, (b.1811) is a younger brother to my ancestor, William Spencer, (b.1806). William is my 3xgrandfather. We have messaged previously, but I have just recently followed back through the lines to make the connection.
I winter in Mexico so don't get to do much research while I am away. Thanks for your help with the buildings.
Cheers, Bobbie

1. Union Street is still there so presumably No.7 will be (although if the numbers have been changed.............)!
2. Not sure about this one but I'll check next time I drive down there or go into the Library
3. I'm almost sure this one is still there
4. Jane already answered
5. Answer already given
When are you leaving home and how long will you be in North Meols? Maybe you could meet up with some of us? Let us know
Take care

Hi again Brian: Many researchers for North Meols are very grateful for all the work you and Joyce have done in this are.
Thanks SeaCop for the info on the buildings. I'll take a look around when there.
Dotty - would love to meet you, sometime, some place. I arrive in Southport sometime on the 28th. My cousin is driving us over from Heywood, near Manchester. She is going to drive us around abit - out to St. Cuthberts for sure. Then she will leave us there and go home. I think we are booked into "Duke's Folly" hotel - I had thought we were in a B&B on Bath Street, but they have emailed to say that they had a computer glitch and there is "no room at the inn". Anyway, I think Duke's Folly will be good as he (The Duke) is way back there in my line too.
On the 29th, two new cousins (met through Genes) are picking us up at noon and taking us to Hesketh Arms for lunch then to the Botanic Gardens, then to the Duke St. Cemetary to the the Lifeboat Disaster Memorial. I think they have the day just about filled.
What about on Friday? We are catching the bus back to Heywood then but we could go after lunch, just as easily as before. If Friday lunch doesn't work, maybe after dinner or something on Wednesday or Thursday. Let me know if we could work something out.
I can't praise Genes Reunited enough - it takes some work to post your tree and I've found that the more names you post, the better chance you have of finding a "hot match". That's were most of my connections have come from.

| Sounds as if you are going to have a busy few days - don't forget the Fog Bell though (down Marshside Road on the right just before you get to the bank (a slight hillock); don't want to interfere with your plans but I would suggest the Bold for a lunch rather than the Hesketh - would other 'locals' agree with my thought?

Hi Bobbie
I wouldn't mind meeting up with you and Dotty if at all possible - I have just been re-reading the previous posts and you and I are related through John Hooton and Ellen Aughton.
Zion Methodist Church was closed in 1984 and the building was sold - I have no idea if it is still there or not.
If you have any particular grave you want to try and find in St Cuthbert's, let me know and I'll see if it can be located.
Bez

Hi Bez:
Would love to meet with you and Dotty - that's one of the reasons I am coming to Southport - to meet all the new rellies I have found through this forum and Genes Reunited.
I will be arriving sometime on the afternoon of the 28th of May - my cousin is driving us over. The two Genes cousins have pretty well taken care of the afternoon of the 29th. The evening of the 28th and 29th are clear as is the morning of the 29th and the morning of the 30th.
Could you and Dotty figure out a time that works for you within the times I have mentioned and then let me know. It looks like I will be staying at the Duke's Folly hotel - I hope it's not too far from the centre of town. If it is, could you let me know and I'll see what else I can come up with.
What or where is "Fog Bell"? And where is the "Bold"? It has been suggested as a place to eat. I think I have to stick with the Hesketh Arms for the Thursday lunch as that is what Jeremy has organized. Perhaps that is someplace you and Dotty and I could meet - the Bold, that is.
This is so exciting - I can hardly wait!!
Cheers, Bobbie

The Bold is opposite the Hesketh - with St Cuthbert's in the middle.
The Fog Bell is now on Marshside Road. The original Fog Bell was erected in May 1869 with money raised by The Marshside Calamity Fund and was situated way out on the marshes. It's purpose was to guide the shrimpers home in the event of fog and it did save lives, even in such a remote location. It was later moved closer to the shore as it was a long way out and must have been very hard to get to in a fog. The Marshside Calamity occurred in the January when 7 men out "putting" for shrimps drowned, being unable to find the shore when a thick fog descended. The Fund lasted for 20 years and provided support for the widows and children.
I assume that Jeremy is the same Jeremy who was posting last year about Zion Chapel and who is also a Hooton descendant, albeit a Spencer one? We probably all have a lot to talk about.

Thanks everyone for all the responses.
Bez: I forgot to mention the graves I am looking for: Rev. John Mawdesley - d. 1814; Henry Mawdesley - d. 1847; John Mawdesley - ?, the one who married Hannah Halsall; Hannah Halsall - ?; Thomas Halsall - ? I think most of my Spencers will be found in the Duke St. Cemetery but I don't really know. Anyway, even if I find one or two of them, I'll be happy.
Looking forward to meeting as many of you as I can.
Cheers, Bobbie
PS If any of you had your druthers, which would you pick? the Duke's Folly Hotel or the Norwood Guest House on Bath St. Since I know neither of them, I am at a loss. Keep in mind that I will be walking most places, so the one that is most central would be best. Thanks for your input!
