Some really good ones here of Southport's Lord Street Station.

That brought back a few memories - I used to go on the train (and later on the Ribble Bus) from there to Aintree, where I lived with my step-parents!

A couple of points: it is situated on the SOUTH-west side of Lord Street, and the railway was demolished to make way for the Winter Gardens site which went bankrupt and then the Safeway Supermarket was built (which became Morrisons).

I have some photographs of the railway lines being taken up - I was underneath them taking the pictures - having worked on the ill-fated Winter Gardens site!

Great site Jane, I love anything to do with railways. Brings back memories of when I was a kid and I used to hang around the engine sheds in Gloucester train spotting the ex-engines of the mighty GWR. Gotta love the smell of steam.

I always thought that Safeway took over the Ribble Bus Station, and that the Winter Gardens was much earlier, built in the 1870's next to the Cheshire lines Railway?

The Ribble building is still on Lord street. Boarded up but a way into what was Safeway & is now Morrisons.

I'm not old enough to remember the winter Gardens but have seen pictures in books. I think it was around where B&M's is but I might be wrong.

A good place to read about old Southport and see picu=tures, Internet site links is on SGB (SouthportGB). They have a Southport Past forum. I bet a search on there and you would find it

As I remember, Safeway bought the Ribble bus Station site, but only used the back half for the supermarket

I would say that is right - the front half is still there. I did read it was going to be a hotel but then the plans went because of lack of funds.

Winter Gardens was the name given to the site under construction in the very early 1990's where Morrison's now stands (they used an 'old' Southport name) - it was going to be shops and a multi-storey car park;  I was working there as Site Secretary/Photographer before it went belly up!   The main site office was in the Ribble Buildings and when that site closed and a new construction company took over there was no plans for renovating the Ribble Buildings - shame really as it's lovely inside
