Fisherman John ECCLES of Formby married my 3g-grandmother's sister Elizabeth JONES of Great Meols (Hoylake) on 15 March 1801 in West Kirby St Bridget and had 10 children all born in the Hoylake area of north-west Wirral. John died in Hoylake in 1872 at the age of 95.

Seven years earlier, on 21 June 1794, an Alice ECCLES married a Richard HUGHES of Great Meols (Hoylake) in Formby Chapel, subsequently settling in Hoose (Hoylake) where she had 7 children prior to Richard (and eldest son Thomas) being lost in the Hoylake lifeboat disaster of December 1810.

The indications are that Alice ECCLES (born c1774) and John ECCLES (born c1777) were quite closely related (brother & sister, maybe?) - one possible scenario being :-

Michael ECCLES married Catherine HULTON 8 July 1737 in Formby, children :-

Thomas ECCLES (b1744) married Alice RYMMER on 18 February 1765 in Formby, with children all born in Formby :-

Wondered if any member(s) might be able to relate to any of these names and either confirm my theory or shoot it down in flames?

bagpuss have you thought of joining the society? Many of our members don't come on the forum and you just might find a connection with someone. You can have your help wanted or family info in the magazine and someone, somewhere just might spot a connection.

I have indeed considered joining the North Meols FHS, Jane, but the financial constraints of a pensioner's income demand that I restrict myself to the three organisations to which I already subscribe viz the Cheshire FHS, the Liverpool History Society and (I think) the Liverpool & S W Lancs FHS.

As there appears to be a healthy on-forum interest in the RIMMER name (sufficient to warrant a separate entry in the alpha-index) I was rather hoping that someone might have the Thomas ECCLES/Alice RYMMER 1765 marriage in their family tree.

The naming pattern of her children would suggest that Alice's parents may have beeen a James and Margaret, making her a possible candidate for the Alice RYMMER baptised on 5 January 1746 in St Cuthbert, daughter of James?
