My question is: Who was the wife of Robert Gregson, b 1796, son of Thomas Gregson & Jane Abram, Elizabeth Wareing or Margaret (Peggy) Wareing?

The NMFHS Gregson One Name Extract from the Parish Registers shows the marriage of Robert Gregson and Elizabeth Wareing on Dec 24 1821.   Then starting in 1822 there are the baptisms recorded of seven children to Robert & Margaret Gregson.    The 1841 census shows Robert & Margaret and 5 of their children.

Searching Joyce Otterstrom’s Park database I found she has come across the same problem and has posted the following comment:

Quote Original records need to be checked.  There is only one possibility of a Robert Gregson getting married.   Right after he marries Elizabeth Wareing a Robert and Margaret begin having children I believe the transcripts are in error and the wife should read Peggy or Margaret. JLCO.   Unquote

The parish records at the LRO have now been checked and clearly show:

Robert Gregson of this Parish and Elizabeth Wareing of this Parish were married by Banns, this twenty fourth Day of December in the Year One thousand eight hundred and twenty one by me Joseph Docker.   This Marriage was solemnized between us Robert Gregson/Elizabeth Wareing (her mark) in the Presence of John blundell and John Gregson.

Does anyone have a Wareing in their tree who in 1821 married Robert Gregson?  Or can anyone shed any light on this puzzle?

Hi Bob,
Just had a look at the one name extracts for Wareings and found Ellen Waring marriage to Robert Sutch on 30th July 1820. Had a look on the 1841 census and found Robert Such age 65 and Ellen Such age 55 living in Crossens listed on the same page as Robert and Margaret Gregson and their  five children.
We still don't know why Peggy is listed as Elizabeth on her marriage but it looks like her parents eventually married.

Thanks Jean for the info, it ties up one loose end.  I have a copy of that page of the 1841 census.

Bob

Hello Bob

Not sure if this info is of any use to you but just had to give it to you anyway!

I am having to go thru my Singleton/Ball info again as I have left it for some time but the name of Elizabeth did ring a bell and looked at the birth certs I have.  My gtgrandfather was Isaac Singleton and he married Faith Ball and on Faith's birth cert. it states:  Name of mother - Alice Ball late Gregson formerly Wareing.  Faith was born 20.6.1857. and her father was Thomas Ball.

When Faith married Isaac Singleton 1878 she gave her father's name as Thomas Ball - Gentleman and they married in the Weslyan Methodist Chapel in Bradshawgate - Dinah Ball and James Lennon were witnesses.

I know I have come across Elizabeth Wareing at some point and if it helps I will look for her.  Thomas Ball's first marriage was I believe to Elizabeth Andow Meado 29.4.1823 North Meols.  Yhomas married Alice Gregson in 1850 and I have no further details.

I am just hoping that I have got the right parents for my gtgrandmother Faith Ball!!!!!!!!!!

I was hoping to have started going back to my Singleton/Ball research but haven't had the time but just been checking thru what I have and can't find anything about an Elizabeth Wareing - I was getting mixed up between Elizabeth Andow Meadows and Alice Wareing my gt grandmother I thnk.  I need to start from scratch and I know I have other papers relating to the family so if I do come across something I will let you know and in the meantime if you find what you are looking for you won't forget to put it on the board will you as it is all interesting info and someone else may be looking for same info.  Good luck Bob from Pat
