I was telling Germaine about this one, no idea who it is - well, I am hoping its my G Grandparents, found in Granddads belongings - dont suppose anyone can identify the uniform?
Not a clue who this is, but nice picture non the less.
Both needed a lot of restoring, as Dad found them 'in the shed'

hi what a great find at the bottom of the picture did it give the photographers name if so that would help you date it also if it has a pattern on the back that could also help i have been sent a lote of pictures from late 1800s from a relation in jersey i ave put some of them on roots chat some of the members are great at identifying uniforms and there is a photograph section where some members are amazing at dating photos one tip if your trying to get someone to identify uniform if you can get a close up of the cap that helps i can put on there if ou want david
mmh, thanks. That wrecks my theory then - I had hoped it was the g g grandparents, with the eldest daughter or son as it seems which would have made it my g g granddad. But as they married in 1891, puts it before that then.
Funny, my Mum asked if it was a boy or girl, I said its a girl of course in a dress - she said he looked like a boy.
Hi Dave, I used to restore on Rootschat before I was hooked by my own tree, my friend Terry on there did a colour version of picture one for me. They dated it at late 1800's, obviously not as late as I had hoped then.
Thank goodness we now don't throw photo's way when we don't know who they are. I have done
I had one of 5 generations and threw it found a copy on a display thought I had that was I mad with myself when I found out what I had done.
Luckily the man at the exhibition gave me the copy better than nothing.
Must take this opportunity to thank Lynda again for the work you did on mine really good.
Germaine

I don't think the man is a soldier - I'm sure he would have worn or held a hat/cap if he was in a military uniform and looking at a different photograph on this forum of somebody in a Postman's uniform it's not unlike this one, except the lapels were red on the other one - maybe this guy is a 'high-ranking' postie?

'high ranking postie'? mmmh, now thats an interesting thought, my Dad has been wondering about this, as we have the census records going back and no mention of anyone in service, Dad's side were farmers in that era.
Now, if it came from Dads Grandmother her parents were Irish from Caven, she was born in Liverpool but her father in Ireland - Mums theory was it to be unlikely she would bring photo's over from Ireland, wonder what the high ranking posties in Ireland wore then? or could it be something else if Irish?
could it be a mess uniform? would explain the absence of a cap or hat.
I agree it doesn't look military, there are no identifying insignia apart from his rank stripe and (presumably) service stripes. Maybe the uniform was instantly recognizable from its colour - police?
