I have a James Goulbourne aged 4 in the 1901 census living in Formby , not sure where i got that from though and i haven't got an address written down . He eventually married Elizabeth Annie Hose of the Formby Hose's
I am new to all of this so would be grateful of a point in the right direction .

The only James Goulbourne I can find in the 1901 census who might match is aged 3 months and is living at Woodbine Cottages Altcar with
William aged 42 ordinary ag.lab. b. Formby
Jane 38 b Hereford
Mabel 12 b. Formby
Elizabeth 10 b Formby
Henry 6 b.Altcar
Jessie 3 b. Altcar.
Other James's were born in Astley 1898, Stretford 1892 and Manchester 1898, and one in Durham in 1895.
I didn't check alternative spellings.

At least you have a bit of something to get your teeth into Sandgrounder. Hope it helps.
Do you live locally? If so you would be most welcome to come along to our monthly meetings on the 3rd Thursday. If you are interested just let me know...

OK , so he was born in 1896 to Richard and Ada Goulbourne so would have been around for the census .
He may have been born in Ormskirk or i have an address in Bootle- Lockinvar St .
it is thought he was an only child .
I suppose he could have been named after his father and used his middle name as his first ?
So where do i go now ?
Ordering birth/death certs makes it expensive , so microfiche in the library ?
Also , can you check baptism and marriages on-line or go to the church ? He may have married at St.Lukes in 1916 .
Ask questions and I#'m sure you will get answers. Its the way we all learnt how to do things
Microfiche in the library will only tell you which year and quarter the event occurred and the registration district. To find out parents names etc you need certificates.
To check parish registers for Lancashire you would need to visit the Lancashire Record Office in Preston.
The only ones online are the IGI which cover early years.
There is a site called Freereg but I'm not sure how far they have got or which areas they cover. I had a quick search and Southport isn't well covered

Richard married Ada Hose 1895 Formby St Peter, free bmd index is
1895 Richard Goulbourn - Ada Hose, jun qtr, district Ormskirk, vol 8b, page 1119
I have been doing a bit of research on the Goulbourns for my daughter in law and James' father Richard is part of her branch.
Just noticed that you have Ormskirk CULSHAWs in your signature, thought you might be interested to know that I have in my extended family tree a Henry CULSHAW born 1808 in Ormskirk, son of Henry CULSHAW (b1781 Burscough) and Jennet MAWDSLEY (b1786 Ormskirk) who married on 24 December 1803 in Ormskirk St Peter & St Paul.
Henry junior is believed to have married Eleanor SANDFORD (b1810 Underbarrow, Westmorland) in Liverpool St Nicholas in 1837, the couple settling across the river Mersey in Liscard, Cheshire, where they had six children.
