The following site gives free access to Census Returns (listed firstly by year 1851 --> and then by County; whilst not yet complete it is being added to on a regular basis:

I think the main advantage is that you can look for a specific surname in a district and you get a list of, say, all the Rimmers in 1891 in North Meols! Could save a lot of time
