Hello I am new here and would much appreciate some help.

I am researching Family history for my daughter's school project and would like some information on the following people. All appear on the 1881 Census in Moss Side, Manchester

Henry J Jones Head 44 Birthplace Ireland abt 1837
Ellen Jones Wife 30 Birthplace Churchtown abt 1851
Edwin Jones Son 24 Birthplace Churchtown abt 1857
Thomas H Jones son 19 Birthplace Churchtown abt 1862
Francis W Jones son 18 Birthplace Southport abt 1863
Augustine G Jones son 14 Birthplace Southport abt 1867
Hannah E Jones dau 10 Birthplace Manchester abt 1871

I think I am a decendant of Francis W Jones in which case it would make him my G/G Grandfather. But any information on the rest of the family is much appreciated, especially parents Henry and Ellen. It appears that Henry was married beforehand as there is only 6 years between Ellen and Edwin. And he was also possibly married later to a lady called Mary and had a sister called Emma who was born in Georgetown, Van Diemens Land (Tasmania)

Any help much appreciated,

Many thanks in advance.

Mark

Welcome to our forum Mark. I am sure plenty of people will try and help you

Ah these Jones families are fun. I think a lot of us have at least one.

Maybe an earlier census entry would help. I shall see what I can do when I have a little more time Smile

I think this could be him on the 1861 census -

Odd address - Road, Churchtown, North Meols

Head - Henry John Jones - 26 Joiner journeyman born Wexford Enmnor The, Ireland

Wife - Hannah Jones - 23 Housekeeper born Churchtown North Meols, Lancashire

Dau - Sarah Alice Howard Jones - 5 Scholar born Churchtown North Meols, Lancashire

Son - Edwin - 4 Scholar born Churchtown North Meols, Lancashire

So it does look like he was married before - and a daughter that isn't there in 1881. Married maybe.

Now it's going to be a trawl through the births & marriages to find out more.

I have been doing a little more digging. I have the following

According to the 1901 Census, Henry was born in Ennissorthy, Ireland.I am still convinced it is the same man as a common factor on both the 1881 and 1901 Censuses is Hannah E Jones who is 10 on the former and 30 on the latter. But by then his new family includes Anne K Q Jones (4 months), Ernest A Jones (12), Herbert J Jones (19) all these would have been not entered on the 1881 Census. His wife is Mary E Jones(42) and also his sister Emma Jones (62) born in Tasmania is in residence at that point.

With all his children in total.I bet he wished that TV was invented 100 years earlier....

You people are excellent.

My daughter can't do her project on my computer because I am visually impaired and it is set up for me.But I will get even by giving her the printed documents and a roll of wallpaper and make her own timeline for school.
Nice cow Dotty. I know a lady in Mossley that would kill for it,she has a severe cow fetish. We just call her a silly moo.

Just you leave our 'moo' alone - but glad that members have been able to help; I was going to say that there is another Churchtown (around the Preston area) but Jane has sorted it - as she does Laughing

Hello Mark

What a difference a day makes...look at all that info! I bet he did wish he had a TV. From Ireland to Tasmania...is it any wonder we genealogists are a little 'odd' - it's all that jetlag. :8-|:

About that woman in Mossley...I think we're related but that's an udder story!

Dotty old moo blob7

Hello Mark

I've had a look on the 1871 Census and found the family at 680 Rochdale Road, Manchester.

Hannah is only 11 days old, and there is a Margaret Blundell aged 59 born Churchtown listed as Henry J's mother in law.

From Manchester, St George Census 2nd April 1871, District 19, Page 10, Schedule no. 48
60 Rochdale Road

Henry John Jones Head Mar 35 Green Grocer born Ireland
Ellen Jones Wife Mar 22 Lancs, Churchtown
Sarah A Jones Dau Unm 15 Skirt Maker Churchtown
Edwin Son 14 Office Boy Churchtown
Thos H Jones Son 9 Scholar Churchtown
F W Jones Son 8 Scholar Southport
A G Jones Son 4 Southport
Hannah Jones Dau 11 days Manchester
Margaret Blundell Mother in Law 59 Churchtown

No marital status has been entered for Margaret Blundell for some reason.

Hope this helps

Steve Baxter
