Could some one please tell me what used to be built on the site where the houses on Fleetwood Road stand?

Which houses are we talking about - the private houses or the sheltered accommodation?

The sheltered housing used to be a cow field 40 years ago.

All I remember (from the 1940's) were sand hills, grass and the odd cottage, but then I wasn't looking for anything in particular in those days!   old_maps.co.uk have several maps from 1848 to 1927 and the latter shows Bank Nook, Fleetwood Arms, Homeopathic Hospital and the Golf Links?

In 1786 what is now Fleetwood Road was the coastline on the edge of Fairclough's Lake, an inlet of the sea.

At the base of the sandhills, on which now stands the Hesketh Golf Club, there was the hamlet of Little Ireland.  This was also the site of the first St. Patrick's School. This was all cleared to make way for the golf course.(Some accounts say by 'someone' setting fire to them -)= a form of land clearance!

In the First World War  an artillery battery was sited on the 'cliffs' or sandhills.,hence Cliff Road which links the newer part of Fleetwood Road to Albert Road.

The Nursing Home was originally the Fleetwood Road Cottage Hospital next to that is Bank Nook , a collection of cottages which is split in to two sections by Radnor Drive

The Part of Fleetwood Road from Park Road to Hesketh Road was just a track until the 1950's when it was used as a household rubbish tip. I don't know how many of the residents of the 'posh' bungalows on that stretch of Fleetwood Road realise that they are living on a 'Tip'!

Thanks so much for the information. I asked the question because I live on Fleetwood Road and sometimes the smell of burning toast is very strong . Builders working on an extension commented on it, and last night my brother smelt it. I am used to it, and it does not bother me. However, it would be interesting to know exactly what the house covers. Oh - I always use a toaster and the setting is low!!
