I have read with interest the posts by Hodgpodge regarding the Hodge family and the links with the Marshall family. I am hoping some light can be shed on the following:
My details are:
Thomas Hodge born 1791 marrying Ellen Marshall in 1816.
Their son Thomas born c1830 married Jane Marshall in 1856.
Their son John born c1856 married another Jane Marshall in 1877, John died in 1882 and Jane married Barnaby Hodge in 1883.
Any help in putting it together would be appreciated.
Regards
Lorrie
Thomas Hodge and Ellen Marshall are my GGG grandparents, and probably the ancestors I have most information on. Thomas (known as Gred Tom, because of his large stature) was born 1794 to John Hodge & Mary Wright. He was the youngest of 5, though at least one of his sisters died in infancy.
On 19th Dec 1794, three months after Tom's baptism, his father went missing while out fishing. His body was washed up 4 months later and was buried on 15th April 1795.
The family seem to have fallen on hard times, and were orphaned on their mother's death in 1803, when Tom was just 8 years old.
As Tom spent much of his adulthood working for his uncle William Hodge, I suspect the family took him in aged 8, perhaps with his siblings, but I can only guess at this.
William leased a fishing stall at Birkdale in 1799, just a few weeks before 2 of his sons (and their cousin) were drowned while out fishing, and in 1807, William leased a farm in Birkdale (now the corner of Alma Rd & Liverpool Rd... the building still stands in the form of Birkdale Mews). It is this lease that confirms that Richard Hodge, father of Charles, the coxwain of the fated Eliza Fernley Lifeboat was from our branch of the family.
Family anecdotes collected from relatives in the 1930s who knew Tom provide the following:
In 1810, Tom went to market in Liverpool and was siezed by the pressgang. He spent a night in custody before overpowering his captors and escaping back to Birkdale.
Also in 1810, Tom's brother, John Hodge, joined the Kings Regiment, Liverpool. He served in Canada in the war of 1812, and was injured in the right leg at the battle of Fort George on 27th May 1813. He remained in the regiment until 1824, when he was discharged and came home, marrying Ellen Marshall's sister, Ann Marshall, with whom he had 2 or 3 children (one surviving). He lost his wife in 1834, and died himself in 1839. He has no descendants. I have the discharge papers for John.
Tom married Ellen Marshall from the farm in 1816, and planted an Elm on the farm to mark the occasion, his grandson, Edward Albert Hodge (known as E.A. Hodge) would later take a portion of this tree and plant it on his own property on Weld Rd, when he bought a large amount of land in Birkdale and built much (if not all) of Birkdale Village.
All of Tom & Ellen's children were born on the farm, and in the 1840s, Tom took his own lease on a farm on virgin land on Heathy Lane, Halsall. His son, Edward, was my GG grandfather.
Tom & Ellen were buried in Scarisbrick Parish Church (Ellen in 1869, Tom in 1870), and the grave is still in good condition.
Your ancestor, Thomas, inherited the farm, who passed it to his son, Thomas, whose son, James, was the last inhabitant. He sold the farm in the 1920s. My father recalls his grandfather (Edward's son, John) talking of visits to the farm on Shrove Tuesdays, when the "loser" of the pancake eating competitions would be put in a wheelbarrow and thrown on the midden.
I have a photo of Tom & Ellen, through a descendant of Tom's son, Henry (who became mayor of Southport in 1893, dying 3 weeks into office)
Your ancesor, Thomas Hodge, who married Jane Marshall, had 6 children. Their son, John, who also married a Jane Marshall had 2 children, Jane born in Halsall and John in Blowick. After John's death and Jane's marriage to Barnaby Hodge, she had a further 5 children.
I also have the tree back to William & Dorothy Hodges, the first couple in the records who were baptising their children around the turn of the 17thC. William was the sole surviving Hodge descendant in North Meols of William Hoggeson, who is recorded in the area in 1381.
Looking through recent posts yesterday my attention was caught by those about the Hodges, I vaguely remembered adding that surname to my tree sometime ago. Sure enough, there they were. I am descended from Mary Hodges b. 1771, daughter of Thomas Hodges b. 1743 and Margery Lea. Reading through all the posts has been very informative, and I am particularly grateful to HodgePodge for all the additional details provided

Thanks for all of the information. You have really researched well.
My links with the Hodge line are actually throught the Jane Marshall (married John Hodge) line. I have hit a couple of snags in my research and wondered if you could help with who would be the parents of the Jane Marshall who marrried Thomas?.
