Holden, Hodge

Hi just thought I'd start writing up about my family tree for anybody to help please. I think I am try to find to much information at once.

My father was Harold Holden who was a gents hairdresser on sussex road for 50 years. I have foung my grandfather James Holden born 1880, and his father Robert Holden born 1845, just sorting out this birth certificate but starting this I found out my father married a Hodge 1st marriage had one son then a Halsall for the 2nd marriage thats were I come along

This is where complication arise. My fathers 1st wife and 2nd wife (my mum) mum were sisters complicated or what. When I went for a coffee the other day with Jane and SeaCopRimmer we had a laugh and were
trying to work out whether this was legal.

I only have names up to now of the families, so yes I have to do a lot more researching to do, but its a start. I know its only a list and anybody after 1900 I have not put their date of birth or I dont know them

The lists I have up to now are.

The funny thing was how I got this information. Where I work a lady knew I was doing the family tree, and said would you like to see the family bible I know who you are. Turns out she is a relative and all these dates were in it but a lot of information was missing. so how nice was that. Also at this time is mentioned a Robert Rimmer 189? so I wonder if one of them married a Rimmer I have nearly all the children listed of the above named Hodges so wonder if any body can help.

Yes, a good tale...What happened to the first wife? If she died then it is OK to marry a sister. In fact, in the bible it is positively encouraged!

If they were divorced then I'm not too sure...but I bet Bez knows! Hope she'll be along soon to give her 4d worth.

She did die but I'm sure on the list I put about who you can't marry one of them was wife's sister - although maybe as you say it is fine if she had died.

Amazing what this hobby turns up though Shocked

Just checked the list -

Relatives-in-law may marry providing both partners are over 21 years old at the time of the marriage and the former spouses (in either or both the cases must be deceased)

So it was okay Cazza Very Happy

Yes the first wife died, thats ok then, the next problem is trying to link on the family tree but having none of it can not remember what Jane told me to do to link the same name different areas of the chart to bring them together I am using family tree maker anybody help please. Then the chart may look more realistic.

Go to 'People' and it should say 'Merge Individuals' and you list who you want to merge with who or where? Can't think completely but will have time tomorrow to really sort it out - the good thing about the programme is that it is almost impossible to lose anybody Wink

First go to the person you want to merge - either one

Go to People

It says merge specific individuals - click that.

Then select the other person with the same name and click merge

I think?..............

Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon who was the widow of his elder brother Arthur (because Henry VII didn't want to lose the dowry she had brought with her). However she claimed the marriage was never consumated and they would have had the necessary dispensation from the Pope (on the grounds of consanguinity). Henry later claimed that he had sinned in marrying her (as his brother's widow) and used this as one of the reasons he wanted a divorce. He did in fact marry Ann Boleyn in secret before the divorce was finalised because Ann was pregnant. When he married Jane Seymour both Catherine and Ann were dead and there was no impediment to the marriage.
