:?: Hello  Can anybody help with some family history research?  I am interested in the history of Holland's Toffee Co, I know it was in Southport but who started it and when?  My mother's maiden name was Holland, and my great great grandfather is listed as a "confectioner" on the 1881 census.

I would be grateful for any information.

Margaret

Digging into the deepest recesses of my memory I believe it was a Arthur Holland who started the factory.Don't know the year though.
I do remember being on duty in the Southport Police when the factory had a very large fire which caused a large portion of the original buildings at the front being demolished.  This would be in the early 1960's.

Hello Margaret

I think I'm correct when I say that some names and addresses would certainly help your search...without that we cannot help much.

It was a huge factory...my 'uncle' Frank used to work there and used to bring home Penny Arrows for us...I liked the liquorice ones best!

Oh heck - why don't I make more notes of dates, etc?  I was searching through some old Visiters in the past few days and saw the obituary of Arthur Holland, the founder of the factory which produced the "best toffee on Earth" - who remembers the foil wrapper with the 'globe' printed on it?  Will try and search the depths of the brain to see if I can remember when it was - watch this space (and not the one between my ears)

Holland Toffee is not listed in the Seed's 1914-15 directory.  However there is a James Holland, confectioner, his home was 41 Ash Street with shops at 7 Chapel St, 38 Nevill St, 79 Eastbank St & 29 London St.  A possible connection?

My dentist is still trying to put right the damage caused by Holland's toffee. Do you remember the oblong blocks, about 4inches by 3 inches, I think. One of them kept be quiet for an hour. They used to cement your teeth together!

Tks for the info.  Gt gt grandad was Robert Holland born in Nottingham, but left to live in Co.Durham.  I do know there were Holland cousins living in Preston around 1916, namely John, Mary and Ethel  but have no further info at the moment.  I am still trawling through the family history, my mother who died 3 yrs ago knew nothing about her father's family - quite strange really.  Robert Holland is on the 1881 census in Co Durham as a confectioner.
