I am researching Jane Buck who in the 1891 census is a visitor aged 7 (born Birkdale) with the family of Robert Roberts and his family at 92 Liverpool Road North, Birkdale; in the same household is Polly Buck, a 5 year old visitor. I believe Jane married Robert Johnson in 1903. In 1901, Robert is recorded as the nephew of Thomas Aughton at 175 Upper Aughton Road in the same household as Jane Buck - a boarder aged 18 (born Birkdale). There is an entry in the IGI for Jane Buck - baptised 30 March 1884, North Meols, the daughter of William Buck and Mary. I have looked at the 1891 census for William Buck and have found him in Hesketh-in-Becconsall with his wife - Mary, eight children aged from 20 to 1, and his father-in-law - Richard Gore. However, although there is a suitable age gap for Jane and Polly - all of the Bucks are recorded as born in Hesketh. Does anyone recognise this family? Is it likely that Jane and Polly's birthplace was recorded as Birkdale by mistake? What do you think? Any suggestions are most welcome.

Regards

Jo

Hi Jo
I have another (very distantly related) Buck family living in Birkdale at the time. This is the family of John Buck, b Scarisbrick c1843, and Rebecca Blundell, b Birkdale c1844. They had children Annie, John, Ernest & Percy. I don't know if they are tied in to your Bucks, but the name was certainly around in Birkdale at the time.

Looking at marriages, a William Buck married  a Mary Roberts, Liverpool 1881 so that may be a link to Robert Roberts.

There is another William and Mary Buck living in Birkdale 1891 census

William Buck
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Mary
Gender: Male
Where born: Aughton, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Birkdale
Ecclesiastical parish: St James
Town: Birkdale
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

William Buck 30
Mary Buck 28
Annie Buck 5
Alice A Buck 3
Elizabeth Buck 11/12

Looking at births there is a GRO ref for a Jane in 1884 Ormskirk, but cannot find a Polly being registered although I do have a Polly on my tree but she wasn't registered as Polly

My grandad's sister Jane was known as Aunt Polly - so maybe the Jane you've found is the right one

Thanks for the replies. I've been investigating further...........

In 1891, William Buck (30, born Aughton) and his wife - Mary (28, born Birkdale) lived at 35 Liverpool Road South, Birkdale with three children - Annie (5, born Birkdale), Alice A (3, born Birkdale) and Elizabeth (11 months, born Birkdale) whilst Jane and Polly were visiting at 92 Liverpool Road North, Birkdale.

I've looked at the BMD indexes - they show Annie registered June 1885; Alice Ann registered Sept 1887 and Elizabeth registered June 1890 - so there is "space" for Jane - registered June 1884 and "Polly" born 1886 according to the 1891 census.

William and Ann went on to have another eight children by 1911 - Ernest, Edith, Jessie, Percy, Herbert, John, Harold and Ethel.

I think I'm probably going to have to send for Jane's birth certificate to be sure who her parents were.

By the way, Jane was visiting my 1st cousin 4 times removed - Jane, nee Ambrose - very small world!

Cheers

Jo

When I was a girl in Leybourne Avenue, Birkdale there was a family called Buck lived over the road.  Can't remember their names though.

In 1871, there is a Mary Roberts - daughter of Robert Roberts and Jane living in Birkdale - if this is the same Mary who married William Buck, then the missing Jane and Polly would be grandchildren (visitors) in the 1891 census return referred to earlier.

The evidence mounts (but I still think I need to send for the certificate to be sure.

Cheers

Jo

This might confuse you even more,it has confused me. I have a family tree of the Buck's,on Ancestry.com. It has all the Buck's on apart from Jane. All our's come from Aughton, and end up in Liverpool Rd,and Grove St.   If it will help it's BUCK'S FAMILY TREE.,and if you keep clicking on William1861  +   1828 it will show most children that's been mentioned.,but not Jane unless i have missed her
Hope it help's  Bye from Marge.

My husband is the grandson of Ernest born 1892.

Thanks for this - it looks like the same family - I'll have more time over the weekend to have a proper look.

Cheers

Jo

Whilst at LRO on Thursday I found the following:
Marriage at Christ's Church, Southport, 11 August 1851
John Roberts, Full Age, Bachelor, Tailor, Blowick;  (father - Robert Roberts, Tailor)
Lois Rimmer, Full Age, Spinster, Blowick;  (father - John Rimmer, Farmer)
Witnesses:  James Rimmer, Thomas Roberts

John Roberts, son of Robert and Jane Roberts
Lois Rimmer, daughter of John and Margaret Rimmer

I do know who Lois Rimmer is connected to - but he doesn't come onto this forum - but I can try and persuade him

Interestingly, the early entries in the Parish Register all say Christ's Church, Southport (not Christ Church as we now know it)?
