Hi, having just joined the society and still finding my way around I thought I would ask if anybody has any information on the Lea family. My great great great grandmother was called Hannah Lea, she was the daughter of a gardener called William Lea and the earliest record I have of her was when she married a William Halsall on January 2nd, 1856, aged 23, at St John the Baptist church which I think was in Toxteth. The census records show her place of birth as Southport, as was William's, I believe him to be the son of William Halsall and Jane Rimmer.

Hannah died I believe in about 1866 after giving birth to four sons, and since William had also died by this time the boys were shipped off to an orphanage in Bristol run by George Muller of the Plymouth Brethen - again if anybody could give me any clues as to why four orphan boys from Southport should be sent all the way to an orphanage in Bristol that would be really helpful.

The Halsall family have proved easier to trace but despite hunting through the census I can't find anything about the Leas so does anybody in this forum have any information?

Welcome to the society & forum

What a sad tale of the parents dying and leaving 4 young sons.

Have you searched the GRO indexes for their deaths? They are available free online. FreeBMD & Ancestry.Co.Uk both provide lists although FreeBMD may not be fully transcribed.

I wonder if the family were somehow connected to the Plymouth Brethren. I#m not up on them at all. Maybe a Google search for that religious order would help. I notice the parents married in a baptist church - could be a connection?

I should also add - if there are any local resources you would like me to search please let me know. Send the details to secretary@nmfhssouthport.co.uk

This is only available to our members Very Happy

Yes, welcome to the society, website and forum.

What a sad tale about the brothers. I'm sure there was a reason for moving them so far away but whether you'll ever find out is another matter. You could try to find if any records of the orphanage were kept... I'm sure someone else will be along later to make other suggestions.

Good luck,

Dotty

Thank you for your replies, I have got in touch with the George Muller foundation to see if they can provide any information.

I'm pretty sure I found Hannah's death in the register for Lancashire, although William is harder to trace - there are so many William Halsalls in that part of the world. But what clues would I get from her death certificate?

I don't know whether local parish registers would yield any information about the Leas? As I said all that I know is that she was born in Southport.

Don't know if this will help, but...
On 1861 Census the Hannah and William Halsall have a lodger William Bullock (21); on 1871 Wm Bullock is at 99 Lord Street, Watchmaker and Jeweller with wife Alice (27), children Wm (7), Mary Jane (4), Ann (9 mths) Ellen (63) mother and lodger - James Halsall, (38) brother-in-law a baker! It could give a clue to the right Halsall family, but not much help with the Lea's. Have you tried mis-spelling the name and looking for Lee, Ley, etc?
Hannah's death certificate would give information about the informant and who was present at her death. I've had children taken from Southport and put into service in London, so it wasn't unusual to send them far away from their home - seems strange though when there seems to be other members of the family about Neutral

Hi, this is a really interesting link you have picked up - it looks like it is the right family as when I go back to the 1851 census William Halsall (Hannah's husband) is living with his father William and several siblings - James aged 19, down as a baker/grocer and Alice, aged 8. These ages and occupation fit with the James and Alice you have found in 1871. Also James Halsall was witness to William and Hannah's wedding in 1856, which I think took place in Toxteth and William Bullock came from Liverpool. I have found a marriage entry for a William Bullock and Alice Halsall in Ormskirk in 1862

The only conflicting evidence i have is that in 1851 the father William is down as a coach proprietor but on William and Hannah's wedding certificate he is down as a tailor.

Have looked for various spellings of Lea but draw a complete blank.

Just had a quick look on Ancestry before I get stuck into the things I should be doing!
1841 Census: Little Hulton (North East side of Manchester)
William Lea, 35, Tailor, born Lancashire
Sarah Lea, 30
Mary Lea 9
Ann Lea 7 (could be short for Hannah)?
Leah Lea 5
George Lea 10 mths

Could this be them?

William Halsall is down as the tailor and the coach proprietor - William Lea is recorded as a gardener - there is a William Lea in the 1851 census who is listed as an agricultural labourer and he has a daughter Ann who is 21 according to the census - Hannah's wedding certificate said she was 23 on 2nd January 1856 and she was 27 in the 1861 census - this family is near St Helens so is a possibility, there is also a William Lea who died in Ormskirk in 1862 aged 68. In the family you found Ann's aged fits Hannah's age in the 1861 census - also the brother is called George and she called one of the 4 boys George Lea, so there are links there.

I don't know where else to search for evidence. One option is to find out what I can about the work of the Plymouth Brethen in the Liverpool area around this time and also I guess to get Hannah's death certificate to see who registered the death.
