this is maybe a long shot. I am trying to help an old lady, Mrs Jones,  who lives in Manchester find out about her Grand mother, Mary Ann Maloney. So far with little luck.

Patrick Maloney (born Ireland) is on the 1871 census living in Hawes Side Street with his wife Ann & daughter Mary Ann aged 9

I have found him listed in the 1873 street directory. Living Hawes Side Street and also listed under his occupation as Marine Store & Waste dealer. But he is not listed in any other directory after that

I can't find him on any census after 1871 either.

Mary Ann married Thomas Sperrin at the fisherman's chapel in 1880 and the lady has a copy of this certificate.

We have both searched and can't find a birth that fits Mary Ann

She is on the 1881,91 & 1901 census living in Birkdale with her husband & children. She always puts Preston as her birth place.

Mrs Jones has been to Southport library and looked in the old newspapers for Mary Ann's death - she has the date and knows where she is buried in Duke Street. But the small announcement tells her no more than she already knows about her.

Mrs Jones is blind in one eye and rapidly losing her sight. I wish I could find something for her. She has been searching for a long time and moved onto the other side of her family and got a far way back but Mary Ann Maloney is proving something of a mystery woman.

Has anyone any suggestions?

These are just some random thoughts that you may have already investigated, but here goes.

Does Mary Ann quote Patrick as her father on her marriage certificate?

Is Patrick and his wife Ann on the 1861 census, perhaps in Preston?

Has the lady got Patrick and Ann's marriage certificate? What was Ann's maiden name or had she been married before?

Could Mary Ann have been registered under her mum's maiden name or a first husband's name?

I hope that at least one of my thoughts hasn't been tried and you find something for Mrs Jones
