Hi,
This is my first time posting, only just found your site! I have a relative whose life is a bit of a mystery, and I hope that someone may be able to help.
Margaret Ann Parr was born in Smithdown Road workhouse in September 1888. Her mother was my g.aunt.
She then appears to have been 'boarded out' to a house in Little Crosby where she appears as Margaret May in both the 1891 and 1901 census.
I am sure this is her because she then marries Thomas Abram from Sussex Rd Southport in September 1919.
My problem is that I am trying to find out who her child(ren) was/were.
I have what I am fairly sure is her obit from the Visitor in August 1874 which mentions son Edward and DIL Lillian, but I can find no more info.
My mother would have been her neice (her dad was Margarets brother but he was born after his mother had married and Margaret was a family scandal rarely talked about!)and as mum has no other living rels (other than us children!)I am trying to find out whether any descendants of Margaret still live in the area.
Sorry this is terribly long-winded and probably a forlorn hope that anyone can help, but thanks for reading anyway!!
Well I have found living people working forwards although it isn't easy - it does depend on the surname
Suggestions -
1 - Ancestry now has the facility to search for births after 1916 and add the Mother's maiden name.
I had a quick look and none come up for Abram/Parr/May
2 - If the son was mentioned on the report in the paper then I think that is the best place to start.
It will mean going through births/marriages for him maybe to get an idea of his age
Once you have his marriage you could then search for any children for them. Again no easy way really.
I assume she died 1974.............and not 1874!
3 - There are local street directories but they stop before 1974
Without an address it is impossible to find someone on the electoral register - although there is a site called Trace Smart where you can do a search - but there is a charge.
4 - Finally hope someone might recognise the name and have a connection

Thank-you for your help! Yes it was 1974! I have a marriage cert of Edward and Lillian (1926 which means he was born 1901)but it lists his father as a carter whereas I am fairly convinced he was a builder. Wonder if that could be a clerical type error?
Anyway, as you suggest I will check births for Edward and Lillian, does anyone know whether I can search at the Southport Visitor for such info or just use the BMD?
The reference library do have all back copies of the Vister newspaper but not everyone put a birth announcement in.
Have you got an entry for 1901 census? Was Edward on it? Gives you an idea of when to start looking for a birth entry.
Was he born in Southport?
It might also be worth looking in a directory for his father at the address given on the certificate in 1926. That way you could then follow it up with the electoral register entry and find out who else is listed. You would maybe get his mother's first name too and that way make sure it was the right people.
Do you live locally and have access to the reference library?

I am in Worcester unfortunately! On the MC for Edward his father is deceased and Edward is living in Liddell Road (Liverpool I think). I haven't found a birth cert for Edward yet. Will try and find that and also as you say look for Edward on 1901 census (although I think he may have been born in that year!)

To clarify my ramblings- I know that Margaret married Thomas Abram in 1919 because I have the cert and she was married from her mother and stepfathers address.
However, the Edward being born in 1901 I think is a red herring now! Because he married a Lilian and because Margarets obit mentioned son Edward and DIL Lillian, when I found a marriage of Edward and Lillian in 1926, I wrongly assumed it was her son (adopted maybe by her husband). Having discarded this Edward I am now stuck again, Edward may or may not have been Thomas Abrams son if he wasn't then he may have been born Edward May (or Parr which was her mothers name) or he may have been registered with another name but used Edward in later life! It is a bit of a mess but if I can track her family it would mean a lot to my mum (who is 70 next week!)
I should have started looking into this years ago when there were relatives alive who may have helped!

I haven't got my Edwards MC , because the one I had is not his! The one I have (which I think is no relation) had father Thomas (deceased) who had been a carter.
May not be the same one but it does say John is a brick layer, so if it is him you may be able to find a relative via it or is Thomas too old, as you did not say what his age was on his marriage cert.
UPDATE
There is someone on Ancestry that has this Thomas as being born 31 Oct 1885 and death 1965.
No spouse given, although does have siblings and a couple of their spouses.

1950 Electoral register for 87 Zetland Street - Thomas & Margaret Abram
Obviously the possible son had moved out
1919 Electoral register for 91 Sussex Road -
John Abram (NM)
Richard Abram (R)
Thomas Abram (R)
William Abram (R)
R - Residence qualification
NM - Naval or Military voter
Hope that helps a little
They married in 1919 so I would guess any children were born 1920-1930
A son aged 21 would go on the electoral register during the war years when there were none
