I have William Marshall son of Robert Marshall married Ann Blundell. His marriage certificate in 1854 states his father was Robert Marshall a farmer. Can anyone help piece this family together? As dates for Robert marrying a Mary Jackson and William's siblings on census do not add up.
Thanx
Lorrie

Wow. Today I sent my Marshall family info to Lorrie and we seem to have a match. It's the first time I have found a connection to Brian's family.

Dear Lorrie,

I'm new to this game but am trying to trace my 'Marshall' family. My great-great-great-grandfather was called Robert Marshall and born in 1851/2. Census returns have him as being born in Halsall, and his obituary of 1914 reads:

'A native of Halsall, and coming of an old farming stock, Mr Marshall's first holding was Sagar's Farm, Halsall Moss...'

I would be very grateful if you could shed any light on my family history, and would be happy to answer any of your queries?

Best,

Charles

I have carried out a lot of research on the Marshalls of Halsall.
Do you have any details of who was your Robert's father or who your Robert married so that I can identify him from my list?
I am sure I will have something on the family.
Regards
LOrrie

'My' Robert Marshall married Alice Hooton. I would be grateful for any help at all as I've been in the record office today and cannot find out who his parents were as there is no baptismal certificate for him from St Cuthbert's any time between 1849 and 1852 (I believe he was born in 1850/1), which is rather odd as he was born in Halsall.

Hi Crem

From my notes I would say that 'your' Robert is the son of Robert Marshall & Jane Howard.

None of Robert & Janes children appear on my list of Halsall baptisms so I suspect they were baptised elsewhere. The married at Christchurch Southport so perhaps there? I dont have any details of those as yet.

On his marriage entry to Alice on 17/09/1870 at St Marks Scarisbrick - he is Full Age / Labourer / Bachelor living Halsall. He signs the register and names his father as Robert Marshall - Farmer.
Alice is full age / spinster/ living Scarisbrick she also signs the register and names her father as William Hooton deceased. The witnesses were Thomas Robinson & Isabella Marshall.

Checking on the census returns on 1851 census Robert is 2 months old so to confirm you could get his birth certificate. If this is the right line Robert (senior) I believe is the son of Edward Marshall & Elizabeth Thomason.

The problem is that there are lots of Marshalls in the area all of a similar age and all naming their children the same! it must have been a nightmare to know who was who if you were a grandma!!

All of Robert & Alices children were baptised at St Marks Scarisbrick. Regards
Lorrie

Hi Lorrie,

Thanks, thjat's very helpful. I'll have a look at the Christchurch records. Have you got any extra info on the parents and grandparents of Robert Marshall 1850/1? If you do I'd be very grateful if you could send it to me and can give you my email address if that would help. I'll let you know of anything I discover.

Best,

CREM

Hi Yvonne
Thats brilliant another piece of the jigsaw!
That answers a couple of other questions for me as it appears I was along the totally wrong route with Edward.
Thanks so much for sharing that.
Regards
Lorrie
