I am shocked to have discovered that my great grandmother was a Rimmer and I wonder if anyone can provide more info about her. All I have is her marriage cert. She married James Green at St James's Church, Birkdale on 19/5/1877 and was aged twenty. Residence is given as Birkdale and father John Rimmer, labourer, deceased.    BTW she appears in the 1901 census as a widow aged 44 living at 58 Kew Rd Birkdale                    For the record I was dragged up in High Park and now live in Brighton where there are few, if any,Rimmers.
Any help greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum Ray. Have you any other census information about the family?

I have a feeling Seacop will be along soon to try and help

Now calm down Ray, there's nothing shocking about having some Rimmer heritage - and I should know!   I think I may know who this is but will need to go through a few trees first - I'll be back

First post-first mistake! I don't know why I thought Mary Ellen's father John Rimmer was dead at the date of her marriage in 1877 as there is no mention of this on the marriage cert.  Sorry if I have wasted anyone's time.

I'm not sure that the Mary Ellen Green you have found in the 1901 census is the right one.

According to my research, she was Mary Ellen Ball, born 1856 in Birkdale, died on 12 Mar 1938 in Birkdale. Her and James Green (my 2 x great-grand uncle) had eight known children - Henry (1879), Alice A (1880), Mary Ellen (1883-1885), James (1886), Mary E (1887), Joseph (1896), Arthur (1892 and Ivy (1895).

In terms of Mary Ellen's parents, the most likely candidates are John and Alice Ball who lived in Peel Street, Birkdale in 1871. John was a 34 year old agricultural labourer, Alice a 36 year old table mat maker - the listed children are Mary E - 14,  table mat maker; Hannah - 9; Nancy - 7; Robert W - 4 and Alice - 1. The whole family is listed as being born in Birkdale.

Not sure if this will help or not......

Hi Jody

These Greens are half-cousins of mine. Do you have a marriage reference for James Green & Mary Ellen Ball? I had a quick look and couldn't find one. There is however a very convenient one for James Green & Mary Ellen Rimmer (Jun Qtr 1877), perfect timing for the birth of Henry in ?1878?

Brian

Hi Brian

I don't have a marriage reference - without diving into the mounds of family research papers in my dining room, my recollection is that the info came from another relative - one of whom I know is no longer on this earth, the other two that spring to mind I haven't been in touch with for some time. I'll see what I can find and get back to you

Jo

I hesitate to say that anything is certain in this ancestry game but I do have my grandfather Arthur's birth cert. His Father is James Green and mother is Mary Ellen Green formerly Rimmer.

Dotty, you are too kind. I can't speak for Brian but when it comes to Ancestry Plodding better describes me. I haven't even worked out what the appeal of this game is. Certainly on a day like today when in Brighton it is blowing a gale and pouring down it is good for killing time!

You are too modest, Ray.  It was a sunny day today and I was working but here I am burning the candle because I am fired up again!

It's good to talk...
