Hello All

Anyone know anything about the Revd John Mawdsley, Curate of the Church of St Cuthbert in the Parish of North Meols from 8th May 1780 until his death on 2nd November 1814.

I have him married twice, firstly to a Jane (Unknown) who was buried 17th September 1797 aged 44.

His second wife was Margaret Brookfield whom he married on the 26th April 1801, at St Cuthberts most likely.

He had 15 children in total, although some died and their names reused as was the custom. I can't go any further back with the Revd John or either of his wives, and I was wondering if anyone new of either his origins or those of either of his wives. I've got quite a few Mawdsleys/Maudsleys/Mawdsleys already and it would be nice to have the Revd John or one of his wives linked to somebody.

Regards

Steve Baxter

I Have his appointment as curate of North Meols from 13th September 1778 until his death (aged 60) on 2nd November 1814. "It is recorded of him that in the discharge of his parochial duties he walked a greater distance than the circumference of the globe. He left a numerous family, and many of his descendants have taken a prominent part in building the reputation of their native town." Annals of Southport 1086 - 1886 by E Bland

Thanks for that. All I had previously was his death date, not his age at death.

Hello:
Rev. John is my 5xgrandfather - his son Henry is my 4xgrandfather. I too am looking for information for Rev John - apparently he was born in Parbold to John and Margaret (maiden name unknown) He was the eldest of four children: Thomas, Elizabeth and Hannah were their names. I am looking for proof of the above. Also, I am wondering where he is buried. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Bobbie

Hello
Rev John is my 5xgrandfather too!  His son George is my 4xgrandfather.
I'm a new member so was delighted to find items about him.  Didn't know he was probably born in Parbold to John & Margaret - so thanks for that.  Is there now proof of this?
How many more of his many descendants are out there?

I assume you have seen this possible marriage
Marriage: 18 Jul 1778 St Peter & St Paul, Ormskirk, Lancashire, England
John Mawdesley - of this Parish
Jane Riddiough - of this Parish
   Witness: James Riddiough; Thos Jones
Married by Licence by: G Monk Curate of Aughton
   Register: Marriages 1754 - 1784, Page 314, Entry 1264

A daughter Margaret was born 1779 so  fits in with the marriage date
Baptisms: 14 Mar 1779 St Cuthberts, North Meols, Lancashire, England
Margt. Mawdesley - Daughter of John Mawdesley & Jane
   Abode: Crossens
   Notes: Daughter of the Loved'

If I have tracked the family correct although not my direct line they are related through marriage.
John and Margaret had son George
George married Jenny Wright
Their son James married Alice Wright
Their daughter Margaret c1870 married Richard Ackers (1871) on 14 April 1891
Richard Ackers was the son of Evan and Ann nee Howard, my 2xgt grand aunt and uncle

Is there a connection with a Thomas Mawdesley who built The Bold Hotel on Lord Street & also Christ Church?

Hi:

I had been searching earlier for his burial place and was informed early this spring by a fellow named Bruce Mawdesley that the Rev. John was buried under the pulpit in St. Cuthbert's church.  He got his information from a book about the Mawdesley family.

I was in Southport in late May and scoured the cemetery at St. C's looking for him - only found his son Henry, my 4xgrandfather - right outside the main door.

No, I can't confirm his parents - I was told this by another descendent and I don't know where he got his info.

Perhaps searching together we will find something.

Cheers, Bobbie

Is it possible that a search of Crockford's Register might churn up something about his family?   I'm not that familiar with the publication so not sure what it contains, other than a Register of Clerics, etc. - another thing to check when next in the Library

The transcript of the parish register gives the burial as:

"Nov 5th, John Mawdesley, Cr, 61

No prefix of "Rev" and I'm not sure why his address was Crossens as my understanding was that the Rector didn't live in the parish because the Rectory (which was on Roe Lane) was very cold and damp and not really fit to live in, but it was considered to be perfectly adequate for the Curate.

As regards his being buried under the pulpit - that might be a possibility if he was buried in the corner of the church where the pulpit now stands.  Its original position was where the Hesketh pew is now - I saw a photo on display in St Cuthbert's a couple of years ago.  Not sure if it was the 1860 renovations or a later one when everything was turned around - the pews originally faced the Parochial Hall.  If the reference relates to the pulpit as it was when the Rev John preached from it, then he is no longer beneath it as the Hesketh pew now occupies that spot.

The inscriptions on the plaques within the church have been published and I don't recall there being one to his memory - the Sexton's records were burnt in a fire a number of years ago which occurred in the Bier Hut where they were kept, so no way of finding out now if he really is beneath the church.

Regarding the marriage by licence - that was something which the non-conformists often did and the Rev John has gone down in history as being opposed to them, although he did back down after the Rev George Greatbatch wrote to him over the rumour which went around that he would bury no child at St Cuthbert's who had been baptised by the dissenters.  The first child baptised at the Dissenting Chapel, North Meols (now Churchtown URC) became ill and her father sent for the Rev Mawdesley to re-baptise her, although there is no record of this in the parish registers - just the record of her burial aged 30 days.

I'd not seen the possible marriage of John and Jane 1778.
Nor had not got the marriage of George and Jenny's son James to Alice Wright - so thanks for these.

Barbara
