I have received a request for any information on the parents of Richard Wright.
Richard Wright was born on the 22nd September 1856 in Southport and married Nancy Leatherbarrow on 16th November 1878. They emigrated to the USA in 1883.
Richard's parents were William Wright and Elizabeth.
If anyone has these names on their family tree I would like hear from them - it is possible the family were from Birkdale. The person making the enquiry is in the US and don't seem to have a birth certificate for Richard which would give his mother's maiden name.

Although not giving the answers to the request, the following may provide some leads for further follow-up.
Searching Free BMD for marriages registered in Ormskirk for William Wright and Elizabeth?, for the years 1847 to 1857 (i.e. 10 years before Richard’s birth), gives the following:
Dec 1849 qtr: William Wright, vol 21, p 494, also an Elizabeth Tomlinson and 3 other females on the same page.
Jun 1853 qtr: William Wright, vol 8b, p 822, also an Elizabeth Bolton and one other female on same page.
June 1856 qtr: William Wright, vol 8b, p 864 and only one other, an Elizabeth Rimmer, on same page.
Mar 1857 qtr: William Wright, vol 8b, p 694, also an Elizabeth Johnson and one other female on the same page.
I was not able to find a birth registration for a Richard Wright to tie in with the birth date of 22 Sep 1856 but did find one made in Ormskirk in the Jun qtr 1857, vol 8b, p 550.
The 1881 census for Southport shows a Richard Wright age 25, born Birkdale, a Railway signalman and his wife Nancy, age 24, born Scarisbrick, (no children) living at 16 Hart St.
The 1881 Southport census shows the following living at 21 Kensington Road: William Wright, head, age 48, builder, born Southport
Elizabeth, wife, age 45, born Southport
Mary Ann, daughter, age 16, born Southport
Eva, daughter, age 15, born Southport
Maggie, daughter, age 12, born Southport
Thanks for that Bob - I had found Richard on the census, but not a William with a wife called Elizabeth.
I have now checked with St Cuthbert's and Richard is not in the baptism register but there were other churches nearer to Birkdale by then. The birth may not have been registered - it didn't become mandatory until Jan 1st 1874.
I have emailed the person who originally sent the letter to see what certificates they have and if they have any other clues ie. siblings for Richard.
This is always the problem when you are looking for someone with a common name, but I have something more to work on now.

I have a William Wright born about 1832 in my family tree. His sister Susannah was my second great grandmother. This particular Wright family were fisherfolk, living (with lots of other Wrights) in Hawes Side Lane in the 1842 Census.
Don't know whether this is the correct William, but his parents were John Wright and Ann.

parents James Leatherbarrow b. 1824 Scarisbrick , Farmer 13 acres
Mother Jane b. 1826
siblings
Jane 1858, Rebecca 1860. Thomas 1862, Edward 1865, Martha 1867.
The greatest problem with William Wright is that there are just so many of them - it may take a birth certificate for Richard to get his mother's maiden name and then we can see where we go from there.

sorry I took a couple days answering but had to go to my leatherbarrow file. nancy is not a link yet to my line but just have a gut feeling she'll come in on one of the sibling lines I am always looking for info on the name
In looking for Nancy I have made a discovery for my own family. My Gt Auntie Liz married her neighbour in Chase Heys - Robert Leatherbarrow. She was his 2nd wife. I find that one of the witnesses to the marriage was one of her brothers who had been in the workhouse in 1901 and sent a postcard from Canada in 1911 - he seems to have been sent there as one of the "Home Children" along with his brother, but I now find he came back here and I'm thrilled to bits.
I need to find the files re Robert Leatherbarrow because I now know his father was called William and I think he came from Scarisbrick - but I do need to check this.

aren't the Leatherbarrows just an intersting clan. you should have heard some of the family stories nan had about her grandpa thomas and the farm in downholland. made it sound like the man never slept
Richard Wright looks as though he was the grandson of Richard and Alice Wright of Brook Farm. There is a Richard of the right age on the 1861 census with them.

I've done some more digging and Richard seems to have been on permanent loan to his grandparents - just his grandmother by 1871. William and Elizabeth do seem to be the couple who are in Kensington Road, but they didn't get married at St Cuthbert's either.

As a final postscript to this thread, the original correspondant came back to me with the name of Josiah Wright of Brook Farm which was written inside a book. The census shows that his parents were Richard and Alice Wright of Brook Farm which was next to Pitts House Farm in Moss Lane. By 1871 it had changed its name to Pool Nook Farm. This Richard and Alice are on the "Park" database and they did indeed have a son called William who was baptised at the Weslyan Methodist Church in Ormskirk.
Interestingly, young Richard is also on the 1861 and 1871 census at Brook Farm and seems to have been on permanent loan to his grandparents.
The only thing I don't know is the details of William's marriage to Elizabeth and I have advised the man concerned to get Richard's birth certificate to find which Elizabeth it was.
William's mother Alice was the daughter of John Twist and turns out to be my 1st cousin 4x removed! The "Park" database has some interesting wills for this branch of the Wright family.
