Balshaw's Birkdale
A popular ballad familiar to older people describes how 'weary and lame a boy there came up to the farmer's door'. the boy was seeking someone who would give him 'employ to plough and mow, to reap and sow, and be a farmer's boy. this scene was enacted in real life in eighteenth-century Birkdale. The boy, Thomas Sawyer, was a runaway apprentice who could no longer endure life under his master in Preston. He had tramped southwards by unfrequented ways to avoid detection by the authorities who could have arrested him, finally travelling along the shore. Close to Birkdale he spotted amidst the sand-dunes a substantial, ancient farmstead. It was thached and whitewashed, cruck-built and with two storeys at its eastern end, and was sheltered by a cop and a plantation of willows. In front was a fold and a large duck-pond. From the farm a lane ran inland, and along the lane were a smaller house and a cottage. The
boy approached the farmhouse and asked for employment: he was kindly received, and offered work and accommodation, and the fact that he remained there permanently is a testimonial to both sides.
The farm belonged to the Balshaw family...

Baxtersp:

I have just skipped through your posting, and noticed you had a Mary Dickinson married to Alfred Sawyer.

I think this could be Mary Dickinson born c 1842 Ainsdale daughter of William and Catherine Dickinson, who married at St.Peter's Church, Formby in 1828.

Catherine was born 1807 in Birkdale, Willliam born 1803 Formby to Richard and Jane Dickinson.

The Dickinson are my husband's ancestors in both his maternal and paternal lines!
Very Happy

Hello Glenys

Thanks for that, I haven't made much progress with the Dickinson family yet. To be honest I've not done much in Ainsdale and Formby yet, although several of my main lines have branches in Birkdale (Bond, Tomlinson, Marshall etc). So far Alfred Sawyer is my 5th cousin 3 times removed, I haven't got any links to Mary Dickinson yet as I haven't attached her mother (Catherine Rimmer) to any parents yet.

I've put a note on Mary Dickinson's record on my computer and no doubt I'll have another look at her family sooner or later when I've got a spare minute. I'm busy at the other end of North Meols parish at the minute trying to sort out some families that moved to Hesketh Bank and Tarleton from Banks.

It's nice to know some one's reading the stuff I post anyway, good luck with your research.

I'm sure lots of people read your posts Baxter. You have certainly helped a lot of people - me included.

Now there are Dickinson's in my husband's line but from memory from Liverpool. Will have to dig my notes out now....

Jane,
Some of the Dickinsons did move out of the area - I have traced some to Lydiate, Little Crosby, Liverpool.......you never know!!!
