I received this message by email today and am posting it in the hope that someone may have him on their tree...

"I wonder if you can help me? I am carrying out research into Sergeant John Bowles 1/9 Liverpool Regiment who was born in North Meols and was killed in action aged 23 on the 22nd November 1917.

He joined the 1/7th Battalion Liverpool Regiment and went to France with the Battalion on the 7th March 1915. He was promoted corporal and was clearly a gallant soldier as he was awarded the Military Medal on the 23rd August 1916.  He was then promoted Sergeant and transferred to the 1/9th Battalion Liverpool Regiment but was sadly killed in the Battle of Menin Road.

His name is recorded on the Tyne Cot Memorial so presumably they were unable to recover his body. His Next of Kin was given as "Husband of Henrietta Millington (formerly Bowles) of 18 Broome Road, Birkdale, Southport."

It would thus appear that Henrietta remarried quite quickly after the death
of her Husband, a not unusual occurrence during the First World War.

I wonder if your have any record of Sgt Bowles, whether there was an
obituary in the local paper or, if his name is recorded on a local war
memorial.

I would be grateful for any information about this brave soldier you may
discover.

With kind regards

Brian Parritt

Brigadier (Retd) B.A.H. PARRITT CBE

I'm hoping that he may appear in Southport's Splendid Hearts Book.  Maybe Brian or Bob have a copy...

Good hunting

Looks like John married a Henrietta Forrest Dec qtr 1912.
Henrietta remarried William H Millington 1918

Parents may have been Patrick Bowles who married an Ellen Rowan 1892

Patrick born Southport 1864 died, age 29 Southport in 1893

His name is on the War Memorial, had a look this morning. The one nearest Woolies as was, listed under Neuve Chappelle
