Hi Jane, I have a cutting from the Visiter of my great great (I think) Uncle Robert Leadbetter taken with Mayor Bamber in his house in Sefton Street Southport on the occasion of his diamond wedding. Could you tell me when she was was mayor(ess) , please? I believe it would have been in the mid fifties. Thanks so much, this might help me slot this Robert Leadbetter into my tree. Franh
I remember Mae Bamber being Mayor - she had several tricorn hats in different colours to match her outfits; she also started the Transatlantic Brides Association and helped many families travel to America to visit with their daughters (most of whom had married GIs).

Thanks for that, Jane. Although it means that if I've got the correct birth date (1853) for Robert he was over the century at the time of the snap. That's possible of course. Next year I hope to get to Southport and have a look at the Visiter myself , if he was over 100 when he died you'd expect some mention of his passing.
Seacop, the mayor is resplendent in her tricorn hat, robes and chain, having a cuppa in the front room with the happy couple. Fran
Well I'm not sure where the old copies of the Visiter will be next year.....the library closes in December for at least 2-3 years for a refurb. As yet it looks like we shall have to do without a central library and no one seems to know where the reference things will go.

That's a shame! I'd seen the discussion about that previously but I hadn't connected. Oh well, I'm sure there's still plenty of things to see and do and maybe meet up with some Leadbetter cousins. Fran
