Hello,

I'm looking for information on my grandfather, Edward Steele, who was born in Southport in February 1907. His mother was Lucy Steele, who is believed to have been "in service". The father is not recorded, since the birth was out of wedlock(!) The baby was adopted and grew up in Leeds. I have no other information about the mother and no clues as to the father's identity.

He was born at 85 Cemetery Road, while the mother's address is given as 83 Virginia Street. I am curious about this discrepancy and would be very interested if someone with local knowledge could shed any light on either of these locations.

Any information or hints about the parents would obviously be very gratefully received, though I appreciate it's a very long shot at this stage.

Well in 1901 there was a "Certified Midwife", Susannah Brown, living at 85 Cemetery Rd. Might explain that bit! A family named Doherty was at the Virginia St address

That's very interesting Brian - that the mother would go to the midwife's to give birth, but then I don't suppose the Doherty family wanted their peace & quiet disturbed by one of the staff going into labour - the houses aren't that big in Virginia St (my daughter lives in one).

Thanks for the quick reply! One of those questions which seems obvious once you know the answer...

It's interesting that the Dohertys had a son who would have been 20 when all this happened. Without wishing to cast any aspersions, it's not impossible he might have been involved - but then again by 1907 he could have already left home or the entire family could have moved on.

I remember a case in the local paper. Someone had died after having a baby. She lived in Lytham Road and had the baby in Rufford Road. It turned out to be a small privately run home run by a midwife

So maybe that was the case here.

Maybe there would be adoption papers available.  Someone may know the answer to this one...
