Hi,

I'm trying to find a few "missing links", no pun intended. My great grandfather was Thomas Sutton born 18th Feb 1851 and he married Jane Wright on 8th Feb 1872 or 1873.

I have Jane's birth certificate but can't find Thomas's on BMD. Any clues? I want to find the link between Thomas and Duke Sutton. I think that I have one missing generation between John Sutton and Ann Peet and Thomas.

Can anyone help?

How do you know his date of birth?

I can tell you that registration of births wasn't compulsory at that time so he may have got through the net. What about a baptism?

Have you got Thomas on any census? Do the ages work out right? What age does the marriage certificate say?

And if you are local you could try calling at the registry office. They may be able to help with a birth certificate

But I'm still puzzled as to how you know the date

I have just looked the marriage up for you - march quarter 1873 Ormskirk 8b 945

I happen to have a photocopy from the family bible that gives the date of birth for Thomas and Jane plus their wedding date. Plus the birth of all the kids including my grand mother.

Jane's DOB was the same as the bible entry and I have looked up the marriage and I have the same index ref as you.

PS Nice avatar Wink

Um well maybe the entry has the wrong date - the wrong year. Have you searched either side?

Have you tried the parish records?

And as I say I'm sure you can call into the local registry office in Southport, fill in a form and they will look. Not sure if they do a search or just look for that year

Glad you like my avatar - some may say a good likeness toothy8

Welcome to our website and forum. Pleased to meet you.

You have an interesting family.

I can concur that should you ever meet Jane then you will know it is her...the head gear gives it away!!

She said she was looking for something racier...I'm thankful for 'small' mercies...

What a lucky chap you are having the family bible. Good luck in your searches.

When I said I had a photocopy of the family bible I meant that is ALL I have.

My auntie ripped the pages out of the bible and sent then to my mum. This was 15 years ago since then my auntie has died and the pages have disappeared. Naturally my mum blames me for the disappearance.

I have three poor photocopies of the original.

Sorry, I assumed you were using the copies to protect the original. That will teach me to read properly.

Glad Deb got in touch. Hope you can find some common ground!

Dotty Very Happy

Debs,

Sorry for the delay but you know how things go Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the Linaker information.

I have a photocopy from a book (will have to check with my Mum) that shows the Sutton and the Gregson family trees. The Sutton one goes back to 1590 ish and the Gregson one shows the generation before Jane Gregson (my GGGG grandma!).

It differs from your version in that the father of Jane is Hugh Gregson (of Penwortham) and Ellen Hunt (not Jackson) who was his second wife. They had 8 kids including Jane born in 1755.

By the way The Old Duke and Jane were married in 1776 not 1766 maybe a typo in your posting.

If you like I can find the book again and get a better scan and email them to you. I'm not sure which source to go on now as yours differs. What was your source?

Cheers

Neil

Hi Neil,
A few years back a chap from Canada got in touch with me and sent me his tree Descenants of Thomae Gregson / de Longton which went back to Bef 1600. I do have the book you are talking about and have seen those trees and I see that it is Ellen Hunt in there, I have not done any deeper research as yet to confirm as I was focusing more on Linaker Line and lately life has taken over and family history has gone on the back burner. But I have just dug out the tree this chap sent me and Hugh infact had 3 wives 1. Jenet Dobson m Dec 24 1736 having 2 children 2. Mary Boond m april 19 1742 having 3 children 3. Ellen Jackson having 8 children. This chap is still alive but in his nineties (sends me a christmas card every year) & I can put you in touch if you like.
Regards Deb
