The reference number is only required by the GRO. If you send to the Register office where the event was actually registered, they only want the year and the quarter, plus as many personal details as possible for purposes of identification.
This is the cheapest option, and a lot of them now will send al photocopy of the register page in the case of a marriage certificate. This is always a bonus because you can see their actual signature or, if they "made their mark", you can see what the mark actually was. (It wasn't always a cross)

There are a few register offices who WON'T help. They are usually the larger ones ie London. They don't have the extra staff for the huge amount of requests they get
But applying to the GRO online costs the same £7 as long as you do know the full reference number.
Now there are sites with the GRO indexes on for free it is easier to find the reference number.
Note - if anyone wants a reference number looking up please ask me. As long as you know when the event occured I don't mind looking it up

| I think it's how they find the correct page in the register - but they do appreciate a name as well.

| You were lucky to get your certificate early; I have one ordered and was advised it would be posted on 29th June - and I'm still waiting!

| Might be worth a phone call to check all is okay. There may be a problem which can easily be sorted. They are usually on time - apart from when certain telly programmes are on but then there is a much longer wait.

I tried to ring yesterday - on the 'online ordering helpline' All I got was if you want ....... press 1, if you want.......... press 2, and so on; eventually ran out of options and it said "to return to main menu press hash" - so no helpline there!
Still no certificate today, so I might try their main switchboard today and see if anybody can help; have to confess it's unusual to have a problem with online ordering

If you can get the volume and page no from ancestry then I always use the official GRO ordering service. Orders can be placed on line with no sae's and old fashioned envelopes. Their service I have found has usually been only a few days. If the marriages are Southport and I guess most on this forum will be then the Registrar at Southport has always been helpful in clarifying details for me.
Recently a marriage cert for 1848 at the Independent Chapel came back from the GRO which was very difficult to read. The GRO confirmed that their "copy" was no better. Southport Registrar's office tried and eventually discovered that the cert was by a visiting registrar from Ormskirk and that the "original" would be at Preston since the marriage was not C of E. The Preston Registrar was just as helpful and in fact offered to swap a copy of their "original" provided I sent them the one I received from the GRO.
That's sevice

I've had a number of certificates ordered by internet that went "missing" in the post (or in the GRO office?).
The GRO office in Southport would however always send me a very polite apology and send me a duplicate. In all cases the original certificate would then arrive later, so I now have several doubles. |
