I have continued to research the Sutton side of my family tree and I have reached a sticking point.

My great, great, great grandfather is Thomas Sutton born 1801. This line is confimed by certification. He had a son Henry and both appear in the 1841 census for North Meols, apparently living with Thomas' brother Robert and his wife Margeret. So far so good!

The problem is that on the Park database Thomas in 1841 was living in Standish and there is extensive entries to support this.

Any clues, suggestions would be appreciated.

Neil

Hello Neil

I have your Thomas Sutton baptised 25th December 1793 at St Cuthbert's (Churchtown) the son of William and Margaret Sutton (nee Wright).

The ages given on the 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years (no always accurately), so Thomas wouldn't really have been 40 in 1841 with his brother Robert and family.  Really his (rounded down) age should have been 45, but mistakes are quite common I'm afraid.

Just to clarify!

Are you saying that Thomas 1801 and Robert 1799 sons of Matthew Sutton and Elizabeth Longton are the parents of the Thomas who moved to Standish and that the other Thomas and Robert are the ones resident in Southport in 1841 sons of William Sutton and Jane Wright?

How sure can you be?

Thanks

Neil

NB  James claims Ellis and John as his sons, and he was living next door to Ann's parents at the time they were born so it is possible.  Ann's sister Elizabeth is below at schedule 214 with her husband James Wilson & family.  The name of the cottage should be Cat i'th' Window (Cat in the Window), I found this on Rootsweb - "There is a house near Pepper Lane in Standish called the Cat i'th' Window. The story says that it was a place of illegal catholic worship. The sign of the cat in the window meant that the priest was on the premises."

NB  James was born two years before the Thomas and Ann married, so I can't be certian he's Thomas' son.  I found James on the 1871 Census with his grandparents John and Grace Hesketh as James Hesketh, with his probable mother Ann (their daughter).  However, this Ann (when with her parents) has Wrightington given for her birthplace, not parbold. In 1901 Ann gives Bispham as her birthplace, which is nowhere near Pabold or Wrightington.
