|
|
The following is taken from the N.M. Civic Society website:-
Opposite the smithy is what is now the United Reform Church. Formerly the Congregational Church, it was often shortened to the ‘Congo’, hence beyond that point was colloquially known as ‘Zululand’.
Frankly I don't believe this is correct. For a start the geography is confused as there is no connection at all between the Congo and Zululand other than they happen to be in the same continent.
As a former resident of Highpark I feel sure i feel sure that the area beyond the Congregational Church was known as Zululand because following the Anglo-Zulu war of c1880 it would be natural to name an area inhabited by uncivilized, warlike people ie Highpark Zululand.
We Highparkers are jealous of our reputation for being excluded from civil and polite society and we should vigorously fight any attempt at rehabilitation of our appaling reputation.

| I have only ever heard of it (the general area, that is) as being Zululand because it was "...beyond the Congo". So not necessarily or exclusively just High Park.

| could the area have some connection with the Boer War, in that soldiers were trained in the area. The other point that could be looked at is were South African Soldiers garrisoned there during the First World War

| I haven't come across anything apart from a convalescent hospital on Row Lane, but I'd need to find the right book with the photos in to be sure. I think that was WWI.

| Well Dotty may be right in that my tongue was firmly in my cheek but I do think my theory could be correct. Indeed I seem to recall my late stepfather Alf Dowling (life-long Highparker) telling me this. Certainly more recently less salubrious areas have been nicknamed after Beruit and other conflict zones.
