Went to the LRO Wednesday 6th December to be greeted in the lecture room with balloons and a big banner saying "Congratulations". On the board it said "Well Done" in huge letters.

The reason?

After 19 years the Will Flatteners have flattened all of the wills - well, not all of them really - they will be carrying on but their next project will be to flatten the disputed wills.

Apparently these wills are listed separately in the LRO as they are wills which are missing from the series of books listing wills proved at Chester and Richmond. I think this is because they had been stored at solicitors offices.

So, next time you are in the LRO it may be worth while checking these indexes - you may find an ancestor left a will after all.

Someone worked out that it has taken an average of 30 people working 2 hours per week for an average 45 weeks per year for the last 19 years to complete this particular project. "Well Done" indeed.

If my memory serves me correctly - did Jean Ireland say that this was what she did? I'm sure she called herself a Will Flattener and I had visions of her armed with a rolling pin attacking a poor guy called William Rolling Eyes

now that they have the proven wills flattened may be we could talk with LRO and get a joint project going in digitally recording them on to a searchable data base. I know the LDS church has equipment and manpower to do these things and it wouldn't be the first time they've worked with the government on this type of project.

Yes, I think I remember her saying that as well - but I didn't get the same mental picture as you did, probably because I knew what a "Will Flattener" did, and so all the mystery was taken out of it for me.
