Looking for second wife of William Barton.  He was son of Thomas Barton and Margaret Whalley and was born 1807 at Cop End.  His first wife Jennet Carr died in 1844 two years after their last daughter Mary Ann was born.  It seems that William remarried and had three further children.  I have copies of Mary Ann Barton's Autobiography and her life History as written my her grandaughter.  (Both make fascinating reading). William converted to the Mormon Church and in 1856 sailed from Liverpool with new wife their 3 children and 14year old Mary Ann to start a new live in Utah.  I am trying to find out the name of the second wife she is only referred to as the stepmother in the papers I have copies of.  I am presuming they married in Southport sometime between 1844 AND 1855.I only know the name of the daughter by his second wife it is Frances.  Can anyone help me please?

Sheila if they converted to the Mormon religion I think it may be worth while having a good search round on their site. There may be descendants who are contributing their trees and you could find a contact

I think this is the marriage your looking for, among some I copied out from the St Cuthbert's registers on a visit to the Record Office in Preston.

From North Meols Parish Registers (on microfiche) at Lancashire Record Office, Marriages 1837 - 1857, PR 3361/1/13 extracted by SPB.

Hi Sheila

I know that there are well documented lists of people who joined the church and sailed over to USA from GB.  One of our regular posters lives in the USA and she will know where to find these details.  I shall PM her and she will no doubt drop us a line.

Hi all

I have been in touch with someone who should know where to find the passenger manifests of ships taking passengers to USA.  She should be on the site later in the day.

Hope she will have some good info for us.

Thanks, sooner, for that information.

Sheila, these microfiche can be ordered and borrowed from the LDS Family History Centres at

Liverpool 0151 252 0614 or
Chorley 01257 226145

There is a small charge.  Hope that helps...I think they may be part of my family, I will have to check!  It's a small world...
