Have reached a dead end with my research. Trying to establish origins of my g. grandfather's middle name so I can move my research on. William Gerrard Wilson was born in Kew Road, Birkdale in 1877. His middle name appears only on his headstone and only as an initial on his death cert. I am most keen to discover significance of middle name. William's parents, Robert (James) Wilson & Mary Jane Dickinson, were married at St Ann's R.C church in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool in 1866. I'm pretty certain that only one of William's parents was catholic, though I do not know how common such inter-denominational marriages were during this period. One of William's siblings, James R. Wilson was born at same Birkdale address in 1874. I am hoping that there might be a baptismal or confirmation record for William but unfortunately have no evidence to support this at present - not sure which church in the Kew Road area may be relevant to this. All and any help much appreciated.
the information given on a death certificate is only as good as the person giving it. Maybe they thought he had a middle name? Maybe he decided to add one during his life but wasn't actually given it on his birth certificate.
Checking the baptism is a good idea though

Thanks for that link Germaine. It may well help with a society project that is on going
Dotty there are lots of reasons I suppose but surely if a name is on your birth certificate it should also be the one on the marriage certificate too. Of course when it comes to census we all know people put what they wanted

Legal documents or not, information is only as good as the people who do the informing.
When my younger sister was registering my mother's death she said her name was Jennifer and my other sister and I said "That's not Mum's name, she is Jenny". The same sister registered my dad as being a retired printer...he worked up to the day before he was admitted to hospital. She gets on my bleep, bleep, bleep...
I went out with a lad who added another name to the other three he had because he liked it...
Enough, I'm getting stressed!
Dotty (losing the plot...)
