Hello Everyone,
I am a Twist and it seems a descendent of the Twist's of Scarisbrick (barring any faux-pas due to gaps in the records...). I was wondering whether anyone had any info on William and Martha Twist, who married in 1835:
Marriage: 23 Nov 1835 St Peter and St Paul, Ormskirk, Lancashire, England
William Twist - (X), of Ormskirk
Martha Todd - (X), of Ormskirk
   Witness: Robert Todd; George Wignall
Married by Banns by: William Wannop Curate
   Register: Marriages 1827 - 1837, Page 166, Entry 498
   Source: LDS Film 1849664

If I am right, Martha was born Todd in 1815 to John Todd and Phoebe Cooper. Which John Todd is this? It can't be the one mentioned recently in the Todd thread since he married Betty Howard. I am sure they relate back to the Todd lineage given there, but not sure how.

William Twist is much more a mystery. There is a William Twist born to a Thomas and Margaret Twist of Ormskirk in 1811 - the only one that fits, but are there others not on the lan-opc.org.uk website? If it is this one, does anyone know anything about Thomas Twist or Margaret's family?

William Twist doesn't seem to be directly related to the Twist's of Scarisbrick. However I am horribly confused by the profusion of Twist's at that time. There are two John and Alice Twist couples at the same period: one with Alice Howard (married 1802), one with Alice Rimmer (married 1788). One would presume Alice Howard to be a more reasonable choice, but I can only find three children: Alice (1802), Alice (1803) and Peter (1804). Alice Rimmer's marriage produced another John Twist (born 1791) who didn't get married until 1818, which should also rule him out.

Another option: William Twist wasn't born in the county...

Thank you for your help.
Best regards,
Charles

There was a William Twist born to John and Alice Twist of Marshside, baptised 23rd August 1807 and another William born to James and Margaret Twist of Scarisbrick, baptised on 25th August 1811, both at St Cuthbert's, North Meols.

There is also a marriage for a William Twist (of North Meols) and Ellen Sumner of Ormskirk on 9th November 1829, again at St Cuthbert's.

Here's my link to the Twist's, through William and Martha's son Charles (my 2nd great grandfather.  As usual quite a bit is from Joyce Otterstrom's tree.

not a native of Southport. He was born at Burnley, where his father was in
business as a tailor and married, a Burnley woman. He lost his mother early,

and except for a short period when he returned to Burnley as a youth and worked
as a miner, he was resident in Southport to the time he retired on super… from
the Town Hall in 1922. As a boy he assisted his grandfather to light the
Lord-street lamps, that thoroughfare being first lit with gas in 1849.
Mr. Ball could trace his ancestry back to the time when Southport was nothing
but sandhills and, as a fact, his great-great-grandfather built the first house
in the town-on land now occupied by Yellow House-lane, then known as
Eastbank-lane. His name was John Ball. He was a fisherman who leased the land
and farmed it for many years. The cottage was coloured yellow and it always
received that name, though sometimes it was given a warrant, "Whale Bone
cottage," for the reason two whale bones formed an archway at the gateway
leading to the cottage and land. Mr, John Ball, and his wife Jane, had a family
of five daughters and six sons. One of the daughters, Emily (Emblin) married
Richard Ball clerk of Christ Church and Marine Master. Captain William Ball was
believed to be related-he always described himself as cousin-to William Ball
(grandfather of Mr. Thomas Ball).
Both these great-great-grandparents lived to a very old age. John was a hundred
and one; his wife, Jane, was ninety-nine. Both were buried at Christ Church,
Southport. A relative who remembered the funerals has put it on record that
"The Church has been twice enlarged since, and their grave is inside the Church
but not the flat gravestone." This recorded adds that he cannot tell when their
children were born, but Mr. Ball's great-grandfather would be born in Southport
and christened at Churchtown Church, "because there wasn't Church nor Chapel
there at that time."
Mr. Ball's grandfather was William Ball, one of a family of nine children (five
daughter and four sons). John, the eldest, married and died of smallpox,
leaving no issue; William Ball was the next and the others were Thomas Ball, a
blacksmith; Robert Ball, who died a very young single man.
When Mr Ball returned from Burnley to Southport it was at the time the
Carnbridge road sewer was being laid, and he worked on that for a time,
assisting the bricksetter, who was known as Tome Wright (Lucky). Subsequently
Mr. Ball and Mr. Tome Rimmer (Pluck) joined in the ownership of a fishing boat
known as "Boozer." Through the winter months when fishing was not possible Mr.
Ball took on other jobs, among them he assisted in the extension of St.
Cuthbert's Churchyard. For this job, which was known as tithe work, he received
payment at the rate of a fourpenny bit per day, and had to find his own
shovel.
(followed by a picture) A characteristic photograph of the late Mr. Ball as he
was so often seen by the public on Mayor's Sunday.
Later on he was employed in the Highways Department of the Coporation, and from
time to time was borrowed" to assist the caretaker at the Town Hall. His work
increased until eventually he became the Mayor's Sergeant, although it was not
for some years after he was given an official title. In those early days the
Mayor went about unaccompanied, and at first the job only meant an attendant,
in the strictest sense of the word. Official records may fix the date, but Mr
Ball often told his relatives that the first Mayor he assisted was Alderman
Richard Nicholson, who was a Quaker, and the only one of that religious
persuasion among Southport's Mayors. Mr. Ball said he could well remember
assisting Mr. Nicholson to put on his Mayoral cloak, though it was nearly ten
years later during the mayoralty of Mr. Benjamin Wilkinson; that he officially
became Mayor's Attendant, and he had the additional title of, Mace-bearer
placed upon him when Sir George Pollard presented the town with a mace during
his year of office in 1896-97.
Mr. Ball had many interesting reminiscences about the different occupants of
the Mayoral chair, but he would only relate these in the strictest confidence,
and if a newspaper man was amongst the company he would always add the
instruction, "Tha mustn't put this in t'paper."
It is on record, however, that he was in the news during his first official
year in 1889. On the occasion of the visit of Mr. W. E. Gladstone Mr. Ball ran
up the flag at the Town Hall. Some say he did it on the instruction of
prominent Liberal members of the Town Council who had been Mayors. But Mr.
Wilkinson was not of Mr. Gladstone's political persuasion. As a matter of fact
he, was the first Conservative Mayor Southport had, and when he saw the flag
flying at full mast he immediately rushed to the Town Hall and ordered it to be
taken down.
Another incident was during the coronation Celebration of King George the
Fifth. An air display was in progress at Blowick and Alderman Austin the then
Mayor, was persuaded to take a flight. This was not a very tempting offer in
those days, but Alderman Austin was never one to lack courage. However, as he
entered the plane Mr. Ball approached him with the suggestion that he should
remove the chain and leave it safely on the ground-a remark which created roars
of laughter among the Aldermen and Councillors standing round who took the
implication to mean that the chain must be safe whatever happened to the
Mayor.
As to be expected of one so intimate with Southport, Mr. Ball acted as
attendant to at least one who was related. This was Mr. Henry Ball, and often
in the Parlour the two talked about old members of the family.
Officially Mr. Ball attended 32 individual Mayors as Attendant in the 33 years
he served the Corporation, one member Alderman, Willett, serving twice. Mr Ball
also had the distinction of serving Southport's only woman Mayor, Miss C.
Hartley. This was a greate tribute to him, for actually he should have retired
early in Miss Hartley's year of office, but it is understood that Miss Hartley
had requested he should continue to complete her year of office, and he did
so.
At the conclusion of the Town Council meeting on October 31, 1922 Mr. Ball,
addressed by Miss Hartley as "my dear friend," was presented by her with a gold
watch which was inscribed. "Presented to Mr. Thomas Ball, the Mayor's Officer
for 36 years, by the Mayor, ex-Mayors, Aldermen and Councillors of the County
Borough of Southport, October 31, 1922." In addition there was a wallet
containing £57, together with a list of the subscribers. The Deputy Mayor
(Councillor Potts) said that everyone would miss Mr. Ball, and although his
place would be filled by another, for many years to come it would be the
thought with Councillors when they came into the Town Hall, "Where is Tom?" the
Town Clerk Mr J. C. Jarratt, presented Mr Ball with a set of field glasses on
behalf of the Corporation officials and Town Hall staff.
Mrs Ball was a native of Banks. They were married at the London Street
Primitive Methodist Church in 1877 and they celebrated their diamond wedding
early this year. For a time after their marriage they lived at Banks but later
went to live in Shellfield-road Marshside. Another residence was in Lytham road
and as a matter of fact Mr. Ball was the first to live in that road, which
incidentally runs parallel with Manx Jane's-lane, named after his mother. He
afterwards resided in East-street, and for the greater part of his time down to
his retirement he resided in Hoghton-street.
On his retirement he went to live at Jerby, in the Isle of Man, and remained
there until 1932 when he returned to Southport and took up residence in
Vernon-road.
Throughout his life he was an active member of the Primitive Methodist Church,
worshipping at Marshside when he was in that district, and later at
Russell-road. He was a local preacher and many years ago traveled a good deal
in the Marshside and other circuits. He was also associated with the Rechabite
Order. He leaves a family of two sons and three daughters.

Yellow House Lane
You are quite right (Janice this was from your information!) - one
house is still painted yellow but whether it is the original or not I
don't know. I knew about the whale jaw bone too, there is one making a
gateway into a field at Crook, near Windermere which my parents always
pointed out to us when we drove up there and we duly showed our
children. The local Council for Volunteer Services are in the original
Yellow House I believe, it is a minefield of staircases and very
cramped, I went there to do an early computer course some years ago
but parking is horrendous.

research of Lynn Griffin
I knew I had read about the Yellow House somewhere before. In the footnotes to
Strangers Charity I found for the year 1811 the following:
Joseph Dutton, a retired whaler had a lease from Hesketh and Bolds and built
his "Yellow House" in East Bank Ln (corner of Part Street and Yellow House
Lane) and converted two adjacent cottages into a Methodist chapel, which was
nicknamed "the Cathedreal" on the site of East Bank House) (Hesketh Register
and Bold Register also Mornington Road Methodist Church Centenary History).
The actual passage in the book goes as follows:
"Bravo!" added Mrs Brown, "and speaking of new properties, have you seen that
Yellow House down East Bank Lane?"
"Ah That will be Mr. Joesph Dutton's place. He is a retired whaler and very
ardent Methodist, too. I understand that he intends to hold religious services
in those cottages next door to his new house. He tried to purchase some land to
build a chapel but the Lords of the Manor would not allow it-so he has
converted these two cottages instead."
"A retired whaler you said?"
"I believe so.
"Ah!" Then that will account for the monstrous pair of whale jaw bones which he
has secured over his front door-no doubt a trophy of some kind. I have never in
my life, though, seen a house colour-washed such a very bright yellow.
Certainly no Methodist who visits South Port will be able to make the excuse
that he couldn't find the chapel - it stands out like a totem-pole!"
"I haven't been along that way since it has been completed," confessed Miss
Leigh candidily, "let us all take a look at this new sight."
So they all trundled back up the muddy lane to catch a glimpse of Dutton's
Chapael and they could but agree upon the fact that he had certainly succeeded
in making the place extraordinarily conspicuous"

Hello Baxter,
You can pat yourself on the back. That's great: thanks a lot for taking the time. What you write seems thoroughly researched, so if it isn't all correct, it can't be far. And you give all the refs - very professional.
There is one puzzling discrepancy.
I am descended from James Twist, born 1840 (we're related!), and so have been tracking him. In the 1871 census, he is living down in Hoole, Chester where most of his children are born. With them is a visitor named Martha Twist, aged 56, accompanied by three daughters: Phoebe, Elizabeth and Martha (only record we have of the latter). The ages tally with the idea that the 56-year-old Martha is James' mother (nee Todd). So how come she also appears in the Scarisbrick census? We have just checked the 1871 census and the record shows William and Martha in Scarisbrick with their eight youngest children (to confirm what you write). And most puzzlingly of all is the fact that the children are all named Rimmer! Que? Somebody is having fun...
It's remarkable how the Twist's just seem to disappear from the records after a while. Must be a fairly new name.
Thanks a lot again for all your troubles.
Best regards,
Charles

Well, that's what happens with family history...you get an answer but it asks even more questions!

Good hunting...

Hello Charles

I'm afraid people do sometimes appear on the Census twice, mostly fishermen who are at home with their families as well as appearing on the Vessels Census on their fishing boats.

I'm not sure about Martha Twist aged 13 on the 1871 Census, I haven't added her as William & Martha's daughter yet.  I had followed James and Mary Twist (nee Catherall?) to Hoole and then Chorlton on Medlock, but I've nly got one of their children married off so far, William Owen Twist who married Ann Tinsley in 1883.

Hello Dotty,
Given the length of the answer, that could be a lot of questions...
I am looking at Joyce Otterstrom's tree - new to me and looks very useful. She has William Twist born in Aug 1811, issue of James Twist and Margaret Leatherbarrow, both of North Meols (this is the one mentioned by Bez). The Thomas Twist mentioned by Baxter seems to be very Ormskirk-based and is a hatter rather than a farmer. Any reason for thinking it's this Thomas who is the father of that William rather than James?
Bez also mentions a William Twist marrying in 1929. Do you have any information on their progeny? Just to check whether they had a James born around 1840.
Thanks everyone.
Best regards,
Charles

Hello Charles

On reflection James and Margaret do seem to make more likely parents than the ones I had, don't know why I chose them.  I have rather neglected this side of the family I'm afraid.

I already had James and Margaret Twist on my tree, so I've swapped my Williams around and redone my "Ancestors of Charles Twist".

Hello Charles

I've editted my post and it now shows William's parents as James and Margaret Twist (nee Leatherbarrow).

Hello Baxter,
As far as we can tell, Ann Tinsley was the child of Martha Todd's sister Jane, who married Henry (later edit: actually Thomas) Tinsley in Liverpool in 1849 (we're guessing it's them as it's the only record) following the death of Elizabeth Tinsley in 1848. Elizabeth was Henry Tinsley's first wife and also Martha and Jane Todd's sister. The apple does not fall far from the tree. Oh and then Martha's niece Ann goes and marries her grandson William Owen. Or so it would seem. Keep it in the family as genealogists might say.
The James Twist who went to Chester: he presumably went there because of his Welsh wife. I am not sure where Cae Madoc is but there is one in modern-day Flintshire, ie not far from Chester. But it also may be because he had an education. No farmer him, he is a solicitor's clerk. In Chester, he begat James Twist (b1871) who, in Manchester, begat James Twist (b1899) who is my dad's dad. It's curious that James Twist (b1840) decided to return to North Meols by the time of the 1881 census. We're wondering if something happened in the family or the area...?
Martha Catherall: are you saying you're not sure of her maiden name? We've got no idea of her maiden name beyong a squiggle on a birth certificate. If you have a reference for that, we would be most grateful.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Charles

Hello Charles

I only though James' wife might be a Catherall as that's the surname her mother uses when she's with the family in 1901.  I know think Martha's name was Owen when she married, which would explain the naming of the first son William Owen Twist.  Martha's mother must have remarried.

A James Twist did marry in Great Broughton, Cheshire in 1863, but his wife's name was missing.  I looked at the original images and found a matching entry for Martha Owen.  Cheshire BMDs also confirm the marriage, apparently at St Oswald, Chester.

Thanks for the info on Jane, but I thought Elizabeth's husband was Thomas Tinsley

Marriage: 18 Apr 1842 St Peter and St Paul, Ormskirk, Lancashire, England
Thomas Tinsley - Full Farmer Bachelor of Scarisbrick
Elizabeth Todd - Full Spinster of Scarisbrick
   Groom's Father: Edward Tinsley, Farmer
   Bride's Father: John Todd, Farmer
   Witness: Jane Todd; John Tinsley
Married by Banns by: Joshua Thomas Horton
   Register: Marriages 1837 - 1846, Page 112, Entry 223
   Source: LDS Film 1849664

I'll give it all another look over after I've had a wash.

Hello Steve,
I was going on memory - bad idea. Sorry for the confusion. I have edited my original post. I can find the refs regarding the Tinsley's if you want them.
We too believe Martha to be an Owen as that more closely resembles the squiggle. We had also latched on to the Great Boughton marriage refs but the copies of the originals which we had were indecipherable. So thanks a lot (again).
Charles
