A few suggestions
1 - Maybe his name has been mis-spelt in the death indexes
2 - What was his occupation?
3 - i could have a look in a directory - when do you think he may have lived in Southport?
4 - When did Hannah die - other than the year. I could see if I could find a death notice or funeral write up - they often tell you interesting or useful things

| In the 1914/15 Street Directory there is a William Barlow Eley, salesman, at 13 Eastbourne Road. No Slewegens or variations.

| I went to Holy Family school with a bunch of Eleys. I think there were eleven children. I remember they used to go to the bread shop with a pillowcase!

I had a look in the Southport Visiter for Hannah's death/funeral. Sorry there doesn't appear to be anything.
And no one called Slewegen/Sleewaegen in the directory 1900/1910/1920
I can't say I'm surprised they changed their name but it doesn't make things easy for you to research does it?

Well of course it may have been somewhere in the area and not actually Southport. I'm never sure how the funeral reports got into the old papers. I know the family have to put in and pay for the death notice but maybe it is up to the newspaper about funerals.
I know that on a death certificate now it would say widow of etc but I'm not sure about the 1920's. They may have altered what information is on like they have with age, birth date.

I've just noticed the dates when the name change took place - during WW1! Could it be that it was thought they were of German/Jewish extract and changed their name to protect themselves from abuse (as shown on WDYTYA by Rick Stein)? I know of a German male who married a Rimmer and she was shunned (certainly during the war years) by her family because she had married a German and one of their sons went off to America to avoid the jibes?
