ABRAM BALL,NORTH MEOLS

HELPPPPPP
I am looking for the birth of Abram Ball c 1820 and am at a total dead end.I know he married ALICE BLUNDELL 10/1/1842 and on the marriage cert has his father as Nicholas(fisherman). He had a son also named Abraham but on his birth certificate father is deceased(1843).I am also unable to find any record of Abram Balls death(1843).The only other Abram Ball I have found was in the 41 cencus which had him as age 20 and living with a Nicholas Ball age 35 so I am very confused. Can anyone unravel this for me
Jane

Okay here goes.

1841 census - ages were rounded down.
Abram - aged 20. That fits.
Nicholas - aged 35. Well he was anything up to age 39 - so possibly his father.

You say you can't find a death for Abram 1843 - could it be the end of 1842? It depends when the son was born. Father Abram could have died well before he was born.

If he was a fisherman then it could have been an accident at sea.

Maybe if you were more specific of what you needed someone could help.

Oh and the society has one name studies and the parish records for North Meols - something to study for Abram Ball's baptism c1820.

No idea if you are a member but they can have that found/looked for - fof free.

If you need more help PM me.

Abram Ball

I found this baptism - a different spelling and no given father but here it is anyway.

Hello:

I don't know if you are aware of the following database - many of the original families of North Meols are listed here. The address is: Http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=park. At the top of the page is a place to insert a name, surname first or you can click on the letter of the alphabet that you want. This site is absolutely fantastic. It helped me take my Spencer line back to 1646! along with all the collateral families. Check it out.

Cheers, Bobbie

Sorry bobbie but the link doesn't seem to work

Link not working still

Hi there:

Try going to file, then open, then typing the address into the box. That's how I usually get to the site. I'll check the address again.

How to find the link

I just checked the address and if you do as I suggested in the previous message, by typing it in, you will get to the right place. Then you can bookmark it. I just tried it and it works.

You should be aware, Bobbie, that there are mistakes on this database - I have recently been corresponding with the its creator (Joyce Otterstrom) to get a mistake rectified. She has now done it as I was able to give her proof that she had got it wrong. There are still other minor things which I would like her to change, but the mistake that has been rectified was a major one with the wrong parents assigned to a person. Actually, just the father, the mother is at present a choice between 2 candidates, but Joyce has assigned one of these women as the "wife" because it seems the most likely - not because it is a known fact.

The best way is to use it as a guide and check the facts for yourself.

Thanks for the heads up. Most of the people I was chasing had citations from the Parish Records etc. Would these be wrong too?

Cheers, Bobbie

There are some mistakes in the transcriptions, these are inevitable. The only way to be sure is to look at the originals. For Parish Records which have been filmed by the LDS Church you can check the microfiches or films at your nearest Family History Centre. Many of the records for this area have been filmed by them. Although the old writing may be difficult to decipher at first it is worth while persevering - for one thing you will often find extra things which don't appear in the transcripts. For example, the earlier baptism records often give the date of birth as well as the date of baptism. On the marriage registers you can see the persons actual signature if they could sign their name, or their mark - which wasn't always an X. Having a print-out of the original is the only sure way to know you have the correct facts. Unfortunately you may not be able to get hold of all that you need so you will have to rely to some extent on transcripts, just be aware that anyone can make a mistake.......

I was looking through the National Archives Online today and I found this:

FILE - North Meols. Copy order of filiation and maintenance of bastard son of Nicholas Ball, weaver, and Jane Ball, singlewoman - ref. QSP/2751/48 - date: 1819 22 Mar

So it looks like Nicholas wasn't married to Jane/Jenny, they just happened to have the same surname. I'm not sure who Jane/Jenny was, but it looks like Nicholas baptised 1st March 1801 the son of Gilbert & Betty Ball (nee Johnson) who married 28th December 1791 (both events at St Cuthberts, Churchtown). Nicholas Ball married Elizabeth Wright 15th July 1823 and all the children on the 1841 Census are from that marriage (apart from Abraham/Abram).

It looks like Nicholas named his son after his brother Abraham Ball, baptised 30th December 1810 at Churchtown Congregational Church and buried 27th February 1812 at St Cuthberts. I do have a photo of the gravestone of Abraham/Abram's son Abram Ball who died 1923 aged 80. If you want a copy of the photo just let me know.

Greetings

You've been busy again Steve. We missed you at the open day. Hope all's well.

I did mean to come to the last meeting and the open day but I've been dog-sitting my parents 17 year old Jack Russell while they're on holiday. He's got a dodgy heart and is prone to fits so I didn't want to leave him on his own for too long.

They're coming back tonight so I'll have to do a bit of housework this afternoon. I'm going away on Tuesday for 15 days so I't looks like I'll miss the next meeting as well.

bon voyage

Have a great holiday...are you visiting the Roman ruins?

Dotty Smile

No Roman ruins where I'm going (so far as I know).

I might go to Anne Frankhuis or the Van Gogh museum.

aha - methinks you are going to Amsterdam? Do I get the prize Rolling Eyes
baxtersp

Spot on. I only seem to feel comfortable at sea level.

I'm only going for 15 days so it's hard to fit everything in - I don't know where all the time goes! There's a Tibetan restaurant round the corner from the hotel I go to that I've been meaning to try, but I've just not had the courage. Maybe this time..

Steve

Lucky you...

You lucky duck, Steve. I love Amsterdam. Visit both places if you have time. Go to the Tibetan restaurant- live a little.
