AncestryI think quite a few people who use the forum use Ancestry. Although you sometimes have to be a bit adventurous with your search on census without this site I wouldn't have found half of the ancestors I have. Some have moved so far from their birth place between census that it would have meant a trek around Britain to root them out.

yes some of the transcriptions are hilarious / infuriating. I've lost count of the amendments I've submitted (though I often find Steve Baxter has beaten me to it )
There's quite a bit of talk on the forums about their re-vamping of subscriptions. Apparently people have had things (eg Pallots, Ships' Lists) removed from their subs and they have had to "upgrade" to get them back. Hasn't happened to me (yet) but must be annoying.
Also looks like they won't have the 1911 census for some time, as Findmypast have got that contract. I'll start a new thread for them!

Ancestry have just slipped in the birth registrations index 1916-2005, now fully searchable

what exactly do you mean Brian? Ancestry have always had the birth/marriage/death registrations from the GRO 1837-2005

before you could only find someone after around 1920 by ploughing through the original scans. You could not search eg for yourself & go straight to the record (unless by chance freebmd had got that far or you are really old ) Now the whole lot from 1916 onwards is fully indexed, so you can look for, say, all Smiths born 1916 onwards whose mother's maiden name was Jones and registered in Lancashire

Brian means you get them up without having to trail through pages.
Just had a quick look and my brothers birth 1944 came up . This will be a lot quicker.
Must have only just happened .

ah Brian expained it better than me and while I was looking

Oh well that sounds good - I'm trying to find a marriage for a Frank or Amy Mason around 1920-1930 so I shall try that out now
Thanks for letting us all know Brian (& Germaine)
Edit - too early for me obviously. I need a marriage & its only for births Maybe they will add them now.................

I suspect that is their plan - have patience

Yesterday I had hoped to get family history done but.I couldn't use Ancestry to search for births in the 1837-1984 part. Obviously they are either doing work or that part has now gone. I suppose this means we are left with Free BMD - which I object to paying Ancestry to use when I can use it for free anyway.
Hope this is a minor glitch. I'm still considering changing to Findmypast

check the FMP census coverage before you jump the Ancestry ship
They only have 2 1851 census counties, and are still way short of full 1901 coverage (neither has Lancashire). Also their 1881 coverage does not have images (I think it's a copyright issue with LDS and / or Ancestry)
On the plus side you can do address searches for all years (except 1881!), which is only available for 1881 on Ancestry
Also I don't think FMP's bmd coverage is as good.

Oh thanks for that Brian. I had thought about buying some credits and seeing what it was like. Wasn't so keen when I saw that you had to have the full subscription to get everything
The 1881 census is freely available so it wouldn't bother me
But not having such a full coverage for other things would so its nice to find someone who has experience shall we say
I'm having lots of fun on the 1911 index though - thanks to you tip

I had an Ancestry subscription a few years ago and found the site easy to use. Last year I decided to give The Genealogist a try instead and once I got used to it was happy with that. My membership has just expired, so I thought I would have another look at Ancestry before renewing. It seems less easy to search now. Also have some of the census returns disappeared?

I haven't had problems with the census but they seem to be messing round with the GRO birth index. While it is fine that we can now search for a birth using Mothers maiden name for example - and instead of having to trawl though pages and pages each year we get just those in that name - I'm not happy about the way those pre 1920 are available only on FreeBMD. I often use FreeBMD but have to check things in the actual GRO pages.
I have never used The Genealogist - maybe you can start a thread and tell us all what you thought about that and why you are considering changing?

Perhaps I wasn't doing the searches right. I've started a new thread as you suggested.

Thanks for that. I think it helps others choose a pay-per-view site if they get feed back from others who use them

I notice Ancestry now have "England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892 "
A quick scan of the index reveals all my favourite North Meols surnames names but the detail is for premium subs only Anyone know what sort of detail I can expect to see if I take the plunge and upgrade?

I clicked on about England & Wales Criminal Registers and it says -
This database contains criminal registers from England and Wales for the years 1791-1892. The criminal registers are a listing of individuals charged with crime. The registers provide information about the charged individual, their trial, and sentence (if convicted) or other outcome. Information listed may include:
Name of criminal
Age
Birthplace (not often listed after 1802)
Crime
When and where tried
Sentence (death, transportation, imprisonment, acquittal, etc.)
Where and when received
Date of execution or release
By whom committed, to whom delivered
Information obtained from these registers may be able to lead you to other records. For example, if you have a date and place of trial, you will know when and where to search for court records. Other criminal records to consult include:
Calendar of Prisoners
Prison Registers
Court records such as depositions, indictments, and case files
Warrants, including pardons, reprieves, and transfers of prisoners
Transportation records
For more information about these other records, where they’re located, and how to search them, consult The National Archives (TNA) online research guide publication, “Tracing 19th and 20th Century Criminals”, available at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk.
hope that helps you. I suppose if you think it would assist then you could take out a months membership for a start

Let us know how you get on...
I had a quick search for the family name I have so much about - Dovey. Quite a few and at least one sentenced to death. But none looked like they belonged to my lot

I found one of my lot my G G Grandmother. I had quite a bit on the case anyway but did fnd that when she comtited the crime (larceny) that she was a domestic servant and the way it read says she stole from her employer.
Also found a distant cousin aquitted of manslaughter he had had a fight with his cousin and the cousin died. (Leadbetters). I was able to find the report on the case in the newspaper so if you find someone and are not sure if they are your lot. Have a look on the newspaper site and you may get more info to link them in.

Is that Miles Blundell? ( a 4th cousin of mine, married to my 2nd cousin Betty Howard) The record shows he was accused of manslaughter, but fined, presumably for assault or affray. Can't make out the sum, looks like 1 shilling
(yes I took out a sub - looks like I will be cancelling my FMP sub to compensate)

Where do I know the name Miles Blundell from? Or am I thinking of Ince Blundell?, I get so confused these days. Was Miles a High Parker?

Germaine

no Brian it was a Nicholas Leadetter so we have another one with a Blundell in there. Gosh they liked to fight things no different in those days was it.
Will go and have a look at that one
