ARTHUR ALTYHi, I'm new to this Forum so please be kind to me! I'm clutching at straws in the hope that someone can help before I go buying Certs - so here's my query - Arthur ALTY B.1873 married Elizabeth HODGE in 1896 -
I have Arthurs dad as being Richard and Mum Alice, I'm assuming her maiden name to be BALL.
I have been reading all the past posts on this site and can see that the name Ball is quite a common one - so - on that basis I'm just hoping someone out there has a comon interest - any help greatly appreciated - HOLLY
P.S It's the ALTY line I'm interested in !!

Hi Holly - and welcome to the best forum on the web! I'm sure somebody will be along shortly to help you - the main thing to remember is not to order a certificate until you are sure it's the one you really want - good hunting

Welcome Holly. I'm sure you will get lots of help on here.
A few thoughts - Don't assume anything, always try and get proof and certificates are a good way (but yes make sure its the right one before paying out) & always try and check any information you are given
Good hunting

Some Alty's used to have the donkeys on the beach. Their farm was in Moss Road, now Dovehaven. Came across a picture of two of the daughters the other day,(from what I can remember it's them), one was Christine, cannot remember the other. Went to school with their brother Peter???. Always remember going to a party there and bobbing for apples.

Thank you all for your welcome and all the information you have found on my behalf.
I don't know where to begin here so first off - I think 1911 census from Yvonne looks good - The Streets directory has some links for me, ie; Guildford Rd and Stamford Rd, thanks Bobg.. and thanks Sooner for all that info which appears to link in.
The Alty family belong to my Husband and I am doing this research on behalf of his Aunt. Husband informs me he has a relative called Peter in the Stamford Rd area (his Aunts Cousin). Could be the same Peter you went apple bobbing with Yvonne! They also had the donkeys on Southport beach!
Now - would anyone know which would be the most likely Church they would use before I spend my money on Certs - I hope to go to Preston R.O for a few hours next week - so any ideas would be just fantastic!
Once again thank you all for your time and kindess - Holly

I don't know which church it may have been but before you go to the Lancashire RO in Preston check their site online and make sure they have the records for the church at the time you want.

Good thinking Jane! Thanks for that, I usually get carried away and forget I need details of things! Holly

St Peters Church would be the nearest I think - but they didn't always go to the nearest church - there's also St John's in Birkdale (that's if they were CofE of course) and there were many non-conformist churches and chapels around that area!
|
HOLLY
|
Thanks Seacoprimmer - I don't know the area but was thinking St Cuthberts - perhaps not - will have to get on the phone to my Aunt and see if she can remember anything (they ask you to do these things and withhold all the details!) Holly

I would say it's most unlikely that they would go to St Cuthbert's; there are three main churches in Birkdale - St John's, St James' and St Peter's; but as I said there's many, many little chapels and churches around Birkdale (as there are everywhere) - good hunting

When I lived in Stamford Road in my youth I went to St John's Birkdale, however St Peter's was nearer, (I was baptised there). but most of my relly's who lived around there seem to have married St Peter's or St James.
Before the new road up to Tesco was built Moss Road was a continuation of Stamford Road.
Looking at Births

Hi Yvonne, looks like this is getting a bit too close to home! It could be that Peter b.1949 is my Husbands 2nd cousin and if so he is a friend of his brother also bn 1949! With a bit of luck Peter will know something of Arthur, shall make a few phone calls this evening....
Slightly off topic, my nephew lives in Stamford Rd.... the plot thickens!!
It'll be interesting to see where this ends up - thanks for your help, much appreciated - Holly

Hi again - not heard of an Alfred but then it was only last night the Husband mentioned his brother being friends with Peter - I'm beginning to think this lot have got something to hide!
I'm off to clean my spade and dig a little deeper

Hi Holly,
Interesting to see, per sooner's reply, that your rellies are sharing with mine at 96 Lorne Street (now Boundary Street). Reginald is my great, great, grandfather.
1881 England Census
Household Members:
Reginald Aspinwall 46
Hannah Aspinwall 33
John Aspinwall 14
Charles Aspinwall 11
Elizabeth Aspinwall 9
Mary Aspinwall 5
Richard Alty 38 Mason, 96 Lorne St, born: Southport
Alice Alty 40 born: Southport
Richard Alty 12 born: Southport
Arthur Alty 8 born: Southport
Ann E. Alty 4 born: Southport
Peter Alty 1 born: Southport
Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 3752; Folio: 84; Page: 29; Line: ; GSU roll: 1341898.
They were both stonemasons so I guess this was why they shared, unless you know of any other connection.

Hi Mike, sorry for the late reply. At the moment I'm still up to Arthur or rather his wife Elizabeth! If anything crops up regarding Reginald I'll let you know - good luck - Holly

1940s birthsCould Yvonne advise where she obtained the 1940s birth details. Thanks

Yvonne

Ray,
I went on Ancestry births 1916-2005 entered Alty, Southport, and they came up, along with other Alty's but I knew Peter would have been born 1949-50, and that one girl was definitely Christine.

InterestingI say...
Lorne/Boundary Street is one road away from Duke Street cemetery and there was a large monumental business called Robinsons on Duke Street opposite the cemetery. Maybe they worked there...

You might be right Dotty,
I think Lorne Street may actually have extended to the nearer part of Warwick Street.
Reginald had been employed and lived in Liverpool (and married two wives there) at the time a lot of the big buildings were going up there.

Interesting - Elizabeth married Arthur Atly - BUT - her parents also married in Liverpool in 1869 All Saints - Elijah Hodge to Ann Hooton, by 1875 Elijah had died, Holly

Hi, a little note to let you all know how I've got on up to now.....
Bobg listed the Street Directory 1914-1915 which has Arthur Alty as Fish Hawker, Guilford Road,
I have Arthur 1911 census as Fishmonger, Boundary Rd., along with 7 Children - plenty of Aunts and Uncles for my Aunt to remember.....
Thank you all for your input - much appreciated - Holly
