Jane

It's not listed on my list of Street name changes.

But I notice they were born in Banks. Could it be there?
cazza

It looks very possible it may be in Banks  as I no in 1841 she

was living in Banks

Thanks Jane

I bet...

I think that one of our members from Banks will be along shortly to give you an answer one way or another.  I'm sure someone will be able to help.

I've got this family as well (James Jackson is a 3rd cousin 5x removed!)

The 1861 census is certainly headed up as Churchtown; the first 3/4 of that page is taken up with "Churchtown Rd" then changes to "Back Road" for the last two families

In 1871 those two familes are still next door to each other, but it is now described as "Churchtown Street"

from the list of street name changes I have -

Church town is now - Botanic Road.

back road

So Back road was in churchtown, thanks BrianG thats great news, it

Martha that seems to be in my family tree now to

find were martha went after 1871, because she was still there you say in

1871 BrianG. :?:    she may be my greatgrandfathers

mother, or if she remarried, trying to find the link because I have here

down as 1881 as Martha Jackson moth  widow aged 74 living at 110

meols cop road head of household Robert Holden or have I mixed to0

people by the same name and same year born.     Think its a visit to

the libary next week. thanks Dotty and Jane as well, cazza
BrianG

I think you are right

1851 the widowed James Jackson has a lodger, the widowed Martha Holding (James' first wife was Mary Shaw, I don't know about Martha's previous family, although in 1841 the Jacksons are living quite close to another Holden family)

1861 James & Martha are living as husband & wife, though I can't find a marriage between 1851 and 1861.

1871 - as you have it. James died 11 July 1874. Don't ask me why but he was listed in the bmd in the Preston Guardian

1881 - yes I have that one. She is living with her son Robert Holden (Holding / Holden what's a few letters over 30 years!)

As for her death there is a Martha Jackson died 1883 age 77. It's a year or so adrift from (all) the census ages but the only one I can find.

Back road north meols

Today I found out that most of the family is divided between 2 graves at

duke street cemetry, so will go down this week either tue or wed and

have a look to see who is in the graves hopefully they have not been

damaged.

Will get back to you the information Thanks BrianG

Good hunting Cazza. I really hope there are legible headstones for you to see. Don't forget the camera

Good point remember to charge the batteries for the camera, yes I hope

2 that the headstones are legible. and hope the rain keeps off.

Well even after getting the plot numbers for the 2 graves in Duke Street

Cemetry from a very nice person up at the crem, who even printed  a

map of the cemetry, with the plot numbers on it. the first grave stone was

missing  and all around was sad because a lot had been damaged and

smashed and the second one still can not find, but I need a map reading

course to try and find the second area, ended up going round in circles.

Will call again tomorrow and have another look.

Back Road

Two possibilities.

As it follows from Churchtown Street which is now Botanic Road could it be what is now Back Botanic Road, ie the cottages between Botanic Road proper and the estate fence?  Or could it be a miss-spelling of Banks Road?  Churchtown and Banks seem to be classed together sometimes in the earlier censuses.  On some old maps there is no definite boundary between the two hamlets.
cazza

I forgot about those cottages at the back of botanic road, thanks for that

sandyken, still looking into it, off too libary this week, to see if can find

anything more out. like birth marriages and deaths. of martha jackson,

thanks to briang and jane have a good start.

Jackson

The name Jackson rings a bell from the dim and distant past re Botanic Road.  During the 1940's there was a 'chippy' run by a Mrs Jackson on Botanic Road.  Used to go for a 'pen'orth of bits' on the way home from school.  The 'bits' were bits of fried batter that broke off the fish.  The shop - really the front room of the house was nearly opposite the old Police station and we had to go up two or three stone steps to get in.
SeaCopRimmer

I believe that the bit of 'lane' that runs between the old Smithy and the Glaziers was known as Back Lane but is now part of Churchgate?
Bez

You may be confusing that with "Ball's Cottages", Seacop.
SeaCopRimmer

I don't know Ball's Cottages?
Bez

I forget which census they first appear on, but if you follow Botanic Road along on the "odd side" (from Brookfield at no.1 although this was once in Mill Lane) you come to Ball's cottages before you reach Marsh Side Lane/Road and then Botanic Road continues.  I think that the row of cottages to the rear of Barlow's old shop are what remain of Ball's Cottages.
