It's okay. We have sorted it. Duke Street is on Duke Street & Birkdale is on Liverpool Road. Someone wants a photo so I am hoping there is a map of the sections otherwise I have no idea where to start

Which cemetery do you need to get the photo?
and do you need company?

Someone has asked for a War Grave photo for Birkdale Cemetery. I have the grave number and section. Not sure how easy it will be to find and not rushing out today.
I thought you would know the answer though
But if you fancy a trip next week.......................... :?:

Jane, I have a plan of Birkdale Cemetery sections - will look for it for you. You can drive a car right around the place to the location you want.

Errr...I'm not sure that you can drive around Birkdale cemetery unless you are at a funeral. I often pass by and there are always cars parked in front of the gates which are closed...

I've driven round it on numerous occasions - no funerals in sight - you can do the same at Thornton.
|
Jane
|
Thanks Bez. I need section C - grave 319
Not bothered about driving right round as long as I know where to find the grave. I've never been in that cemetery but I guess it is quite large.
It is for someone who is writing a book about a certain crew during the second World war. One is buried in there.

I'll take you, my maternal and paternal grandparents are buried there.
However, my mum said she wanted to be cremated, the cemetery was too cold with winds coming from the sea!

Please ask...Hi Jane
When you next speak to the gentleman in question would you ask him if he has a talk in him? I'm sure the prog sec would be interested.

The map is the standard thing they give you when you enquire at the desk at the Crematorium - it isn't so detailed as to show the graves. When I got my copy the staff put arrows on it to show whereabouts the graves were in the section. Believe me I would love to have copies of the detailed maps which they have for both cemeteries.
Section C is the left hand mound at the front of the cemetery as you view it from the road and a path runs over the top of it dividing it into 2. The halves are labelled C1 and C2 and it might simplify the search if you knew which half it was as the gaves on those mounds look to be tightly packed in. Anyway I will give you the map tomorrow.

I've never been in that cemetery
Oh yes you have You've hunted for more than one Rimmer in there - it's the one where my nephew (Ian) was the Supervisor (near to where the Gregson's live).
|
Jane
|
Now I am confused. Which isn't difficult.
The one near the Gregson's is Duke Street
On Liverpool Road there are 2 cemeteries opposite each other - one is Catholic. Isn't that Birkdale cemetery? It is according to the street map
While I've been searching on the commonwealth war graves site for the war memorial it gives a few burial places for Southport
Southport (St Cuthbert) Churchyard
Southport (St John) Churchyard
Southport (Duke Street) Cemetery
Southport (Birkdale ) Cemetery
Southport (Birkdale Catholic) Cemetery
|
Bez
|
As you head to Ainsdale, the one on the left is the Catholic Cemetery - the one on the right is Birkdale Cemetery which is where you want to go to.

I know this one as Liverpool Road Cemetery and it's more Ainsdale than Birkdale (but my nephew was in charge of this one as well - I have a list of all the Rimmers buried there) - just in case anybody need to know
|
Jane
|
so have I been before?
I wonder why its called Birkdale cemetery - I too thought that it wasn't actually in Birkdale. Or maybe it was in the olden days............ :?:
PS - Seacop might be worth mentioning things you can look up under the Rimmer section too.

Mmmm - maybe I should - thanks for the tip

Cemeteries are normally on the edge / outskirks of towns.
Hence, Southport cemetery is at the bottom of Duke St. Southport
and Birkdale Cemetery is at the south end of Birkdale on Liverpool Rd.
|
Dotty
|
I say...The boundary between Ainsdale and Birkdale is Oakwood Ave which is the first road on the left passed Sacred Heart RC Church.

Brian & I called in at Birkdale Cemetery on our way home from seeing the QE2 last Friday. We found a map of the sections at the main entrance and luckily section C wasn't very big so we walked up & down and found the grave
It wasn't a war grave as I thought it would. The man in question, Sgt Kenneth Craven Oswald, was buried with his father and his Mother was also buried at a later date in the same grave.
I emailed the photo's to the man who asked and he thanked me. Doubt he could give us a talk Dotty - not sure but think he lives way down south. He is writing a book about a particular aircraft - a Halifax - and its crew during the second war.
Oh and thanks to Bez I now have a copy of Birkdale cemetery. If anyone is interested I can send a copy via email if they want

Glad you all received it okay - amazing really because my emails hadn't worked all day. I managed to send that one and off they went again. Been like this most of the week. This morning I have got some from early yesterday but not a very important one from my daughter - luckily she sent a text so I did know she needed me.
