bus service to Blackpool
Anyone know when and what this was ? It says on the bus Collingwood Daily Service to Blackpool . I am aware that there is a Collingwood Hotel there , but was part of the daily service?

What a wonderful picture. It looks like a giant bath tub
Have you any idea of a date - even a rough one? There may well be an advert for the service in an old newspaper, especially if this was a regular service from Southport - or maybe it wasn't from here?

No idea of the date , sorry . Would imagine though that the distance couldnīt have been so far. Have seen pictures of the old buses which did the tours on the beach but they looked far robuster than this one .

It's the wheels that intrigued me. They look more like an old steam train..........

Is it me...I'm 100% sure we have had this photo on the forum before only it was supposed to be a day out. It belonged to someone who visited the forum regularly at the time.
I bet it's still there from the beginning...it was also about the same time as a photo of a cemetery where a war grave was situated and we were asked to identify the cemetery if we could. Trust me...I am an elephant and I never forget!
And...sutcliffe...the person who put the photo on the forum knew several of the individuals. I bet Bez would know the answer!

Thanks Dotty,
I have just looked at a similar photo " another Mystery trip" posted on May 7 2007. It states the photo is from 1924 and something to do with the photographers from Rams Head Hotel , Longton . The photo seems to be of a much later date than mine , judging by the state of the bus . The design is still the same though.

By the way , I also have the feeling it is running on old tram rails !

Mmmm...It's odd because there is a chap on the front row who is wearing a cap and looks like the driver...I'm sure we've had a forum post about this very photo...we were all saying why would the driver be sat on the bus too!
Anyway, I hope you're successful in your search for more info..

Dotty Sutcliffe did say it was here - http://nmfhssouthport.myfreeforum.org/about846.html
If you open 2 windows and compare we (Brian & Jane) think they are taken at the same place though..................

I think both are taken by the same Russels photographers of the Rams Head Hotel , Longton ( Preston ). There is one photo taken by them in the A2A database entitled "Charabanc outing in c 1920. Coach - W. C. Standerwick, King Edward Garage, Blackpool. Tel 627. Taken by Russels Photographers, Rams Head Hotel, Longton. 36/20 c 1920"
It would be interesting to find out if these photographers also worked in Southport and also what the markings on the side of the other bus from 1924
depict . I canīt decipher it , can you ?

It looks like a stamp - maybe the make of the bus?
I doubt Longton will be included in a Southport paper and without a date of some kind impossible to search.
I am guessing that your bus is a lot older than the other one. Shame that Jean doesn't seem to post any more. She was last on the site in April - I shall email Jean and let her know about this thread.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the email Admin. I've not gone away, I don't log in unless I'm posting but I do call in at least once a week. Been concentrating on another branch of the family away from North Meols.
The two photos do look like they were taken at the same place, I've just enlarged mine but can't make out what the badge says.
I was told that my grandmother is on my picture holding her eldest child, that was how I estimated the date to be 1924. I am not convinced that it is my grandmother so it could be from a different time.
My grandparents lived in Banks, maybe it was a bus service to Blackpool perhaps via Preston and grandma was going shopping?
Maybe someone else will recognise some of the other passengers.

Dang it...I can see they are completely different now...
What a shame! Still it provoked a bit of interest which isn't a bad thing...

Thanks to Bob Dobson of Landy Publishing , I can now identify the bus service. It was run by Collingwood Motors of Liverpool for their Liverpool to Blackpool service. They had 4 charabancs, all Daimlers and sold out to Ribble on 1 January 1927. The picture was taken outside the Ram's Head Hotel, Longton. This must have been a regular stop on the route.

what wonderful news. I wonder if there was a resident photographer who took the photo and then posted it on to you. A bit like those seaside photographers who would catch you walking along the sea front.
