Carolan/Carlin/Ball 1871HelloPlease could anyone help with these addresses and names (Carolan/Carlin/O'Carolan) In 1871 Catherine Carolan (born Meath, Ireland abt 1830) widow of Bernard (farmer from Whitewood, Meath) lived at 6 Upper King Street with sons Hugh and Matthew (both born Meath abt 1853 -1855) They lodged with Sarah Ball (56, mangle woman), William Ball (29, gravedigger) Charles Ball (22, railway carriage greaser) and Mary Brook/Brock, 50, visitor). Catherine died at that address in July 1872 attended by Sarah Ann Robinson of the same address. Sept 2nd 1872 in Liverpool Matthew 22 married Mary Shandley (sometimes spelt Shanley) 24. They had a son Bernard Carolan born 16 June 1873 at The Hermitage, Lord St Jan 27th 1873 Matthew's brother Hugh, 21, still of 6 Upper King St married Mary's sister Bridget Shandley(Shanley), 26. Bridget's address was given as Richmond Cottage, Lord Street, Southport. Their son John later became a professional footballer. Any information on these people, their cohabitees and their likely relationships would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Whilst having a 'google' found this, it mentions a Bernard Carolan from Meath. Any connection?

Thanks Yvonne. That's interesting but because of the dates it's probably not the specific Bernard Carolan I'm looking for. However because of the name and the locality it's possible there might be a lateral connection. I'll keep the details and it may one day connect. I've also made contact with the Meath Genealogy Centre so thanks very much for letting me know. Susan |

Coincidence?Well done Yvonne, it's amazing who you find with a Google search.
Susan, with that name it is 100% guaranteed that this chap belongs to you whether he fits your time line. The name is too specific and there is no such thing as coincidence.

1. John, the butcher in Crossens village, and 2. The bottled variety (very nice with ice)

Being vegetarian I think I'd plump for the Carolan's water dynasty - might be owed a share of the inheritance.
In the meantime maybe this will ring some bells with John the butcher. 1872/1873 Bernard's two sons Matthew and Hugh married Mary and Bridget Shanley, who I assume were sisters. All ended up in Liverpool. Hugh+Bridget had two sons: 1:John Charles, married Margaret Stembridge. Last known as a prossional footballer in 1901. 2. Joseph Thomas, joiner. Last documented as marrying Esther Armitstead in 1907 Matthew and Mary had 7 children but only 1 male is unaccounted for - Joseph Patrick who was 24 in 1901. How easy would it be if the butcher recognised his great grandfather from this! If not I'll happily pass on what might be of use to him... |

Called in to see John Carolan:
father: Gerald David, Butcher in Aintree, lived in Huyton, Liverpool grandfather: Matthew Carolan, born Blackrock (south of Dublin) c.1885 (died 1976); married to Emily John says his father had a brother, John? He is going to have a look at what he can find out over the week-end and I've arranged to see him early next week - so, as they say, watch this space

Thank you very much. Even though that doesn't match what I've built so far, it's still a small world. My Carolans (by then called Carlin) end up in Huyton too. That's where I grew up. |
