Cecily BondMy g-grandmother was Margaret Ellen Bond born 06 March 1874 in Formby. I have copies from the GRO of certificates of her Birth, Marriage and Death which all occurred in Formby
On her Birth Certificate, her name is given as Maggy Ellen and her mother is shown as Cecily Bond of Formby. The space for Name and Surname of Father, and the space for Occupation of Father are both left blank. The birth was registered on 14 April 1874 by Cecily Bond, Mother and the Registrar was J. Shepherd.
According to and Entry of Marriage, on 06 June 1894, at the Church of Our Lady of Compassion, Formby, in the District of Ormskirk in the County of Lancaster the marriage took place between James Mawdsley, age 24 years, bachelor, general labourer of Liverpool Road, Formby and Margaret Ellen Bond, age 20 years, spinster also of Liverpool Road, Formby.
The father of James Mawdsley is given as Thomas Mawdsley, Railway Platelayer.
The name of Margaret Ellen Bond's father is not given (the space is struck through). The witnesses were Edward Mawdsley and Agnes Bond. The priest was Wilfrid Carr and the Registrar was J. Shepherd.
Searches on Ancestry throw up several Cecily Bonds in the Ormskirk registration area, any one of which might easily be the correct one. Jim Freely has helped me to discount one of them but I am looking for anyone that can help me solve the puzzle and point me towards the Cecily Bond.

Have you found Cecily with her daughter on the 1881 census?
What about earlier census?
Maybe if you let everyone know what they said someone might be able to help with earlier/later census
Did Cecily ever marry?
Who is the witness Agnes Bond?
Sometimes you have to go sideways to get some more information on the person you want
If Agnes was a sister it might be possible to find them together at home when they were younger
Have you tried looking for a death?
The local papers carried some good funeral reports and they often help with other family members
Hope some of those ideas might help

Hello Ron
Would have helped if you'd given a clue as to which Cecily BOND Jim Feely had helped you discount, but this one strikes me as a likely candidate to have produced an illegitimate child in 1874 :-
1871 Census
RG10/3872 folio 146 page 50
Liverpool Road, Formby
Thomas BOND, 58, ag labourer, LAN Formby
Mary, wife, 42, At Sea (British Subject)
Cecily, daur, 13, LAN Formby
Lilly, daur, 2 months, LAN Formby
Ten years earlier :-
1861 Census
RG9/2759 folio 9 page 13
Cheapside, Formby
Thomas BOND, 45, ag labourer, LAN Formby
Mary, wife, 28, At Sea (British Subject)
Isabella, daur, 8, LAN Formby
Cecily, daur, 3, LAN Formby
Lancashire BMD has :-
Marriage
1857 (JuneQ)
North Meols St Cuthbert
Thomas BOND and Mary TAYLOR
And Free BMD :-
Birth
1857 DecQ
Cicely BOND
Ormskirk 8b/504

Jane asked :- Who is the witness Agnes Bond?
She's almost certainly Cecily's sister (so therefore Margaret Ellen's aunt), since in the 1891 Census :-
RG12/3031 folio 59 page 12
Cottage, Cheapside, Formby, Lancashire
Mary BOND, widow, 54, midwife, born on the sea
Lilly, daur, U, 22, charwoman, LAN Formby
Agnes, daur, 17, dressmaker's apprentice, LAN Formby
And in the 1881 :-
RG11/3746 folio 106 page 8
Cheapside, Formby, Lancashire
Thomas BOND, 68, annuitant, LAN Formby
Mary, wife, 50, born at sea
Lily M, daur, 12, LAN Formby
Agnes, daur, 7, LAN Formby
Margaret E, grand-daur, 7, LAN Formby
Alice COCKER, visitor, U, 19, domestic servant, LAN Preston

Jane also asked :- Did Cecily ever marry?
Free BMD has :-
Marriage
1879
Cecily BOND and Cuthbert MAWDSLEY
Ormskirk 8b/907
Cuthbert (b1859 Formby) being a son of Richard MAWDSLEY (b1824 Formby) and Margaret nee WRIGHT.
Cecily's daughter Margaret Ellen BOND of course married James MAWDSLEY (b1869 Formby), son of Thomas MAWDSLEY (b1827 Formby) and Catherine nee ABRAM.
Both Richard & Thomas being sons of John MAWDSLEY and Isabella nee KIRKBY.
So BOND mother & daughter's spouses were in fact first cousins?
NB. In the 1891 Formby Census Cicely & Cuthbert + five MAWDSLEY children are living in the same cottage as Cicely's mother Mary and sisters Lillian & Agnes BOND.

Hello again Ron
Just noticed on another thread that baxtersp has "claimed" the 1857 Thomas BOND/Mary TAYLOR marriage in St Cuthbert's.
In which case, you'll need to purchase a copy birth certificate for one of your Thomas & Mary BOND's children in order to determine Mary's maiden name and (hopefully) pin down the marriage.
Identifiable children are :-
1857 DecemberQ
Cicely BOND
Ormskirk 8b/504
1869 MarchQ
Lilly Mary BOND
Ormskirk 8b/685
1874 JuneQ
Isabella Agnes BOND
Ormskirk 8b/732
Incidentally, this is almost certainly your ancestor Thomas BOND with his parents and siblings in the 1841 Census :-
HO 107/519/8 folio 26 page 13
Formby, Lancashire
John BOND, 65, farmer, Y (born in Lancashire)
Scicley, 60, Y
Richard, 35, Y
William, 30, Y
Thomas, 25, Y
Winifred, 20, Y
The last named Winifred BOND married Joseph RIMMER in 1843 in Liverpool - her widowed father + siblings Richard & Thomas living with her and her husband in Dangers Lane, Formby, in the 1851 Census.

Bingo...Well, you've convinced me...
Thank you Bagpuss for that information. I truly hope that it is a help to Ron, Jim, baxtersp and anyone else that are searching these lines.

Hi All,
Firstly, my apologies for not attending to the site for the past few days but my wife has been/is unwell and my time has been appropriated whilst I act as nurse (untrained).
The person that Jim Freely excluded was Mary Taylor. I overlooked the fact that he did so in a PM and so others were unable to see his reasoning. I then searched on Free BMD for marriages in the Ormskirk records between Mar 1845 and Dec 1860 for people named Mary that had married a Thomas Bond. I also searched for entries where Thomas Bond had married a woman with the first name Mary.
That produced the following:-
Two entries for Thomas Bond
Marriages Dec 1849 (>99%)
Bond Thomas Ormskirk 21 496
and
Marriages Jun 1857 (>99%)
Bond Thomas Ormskirk 8b 831
However there was only one entry for Mary ******** who married Thomas Bond
Marriages Dec 1849 (>99%)
Thompson Mary Ormskirk 21 496
Which suggests to me that it is possible that Thomas Bond married Mary Thompson in Q4 of 1849. Was this the Thomas Bond that I am looking for and was Mary Bond (nee Thompson) the mother of Cecily Bond, the mother of Margaret/Maggy Ellen Bond?
I have searched for records of the birth of a Mary Thompson, born at sea but without success. I also searched the 1841 Census records for the Ormskirk district for a Thompson family with a daughter Mary, also without success. Mind you, if she was old enough to get married in 1849, her birth would predate the 1837 start date for FreeBMD (the Census returns indicate that she was born 1829/1830) and if she was born at sea, it is possible that her parents were overseas (or in some other part of the country) at the 1841 Census.
I need to sit down and reconsider the information that has been posted and try and establish some start point for future searches.
Thank you all again for your information and guidance.

Hi Ron
The 1849 marrriage can't be yours since your Thomas BOND is described as unmarried in the 1851 Census?
The JuneQ 1857 marriage in Ormskirk has of course already been claimed by baxtersp, but did you not also notice this on Free BMD? :-
Marriages
1857 SeptemberQ
Ormskirk 8b/831
BOND Thomas
CAIN Margaret
SCARISBRICK Henry
SNAPE William
WHITTINGHAM Nancy
Three grooms, but only two brides - the missing one almost certainly being Mrs Thomas BOND?
Most unfortunate, but you can still determine the identify of Thomas BOND's bride either by purchasing a copy marriage certificate using the above reference, or this one :-
Births
1857 December Q
Cicely BOND
Ormskirk 8b/504
Forgive me if you already know, but you can order on-line at :-
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
at a cost of just £7-00.
Ascertaining the maiden name of Cicely's mother (which a copy of Cicely's birth certificate should contain) just might help you identify her with her family in the 1841 & 1851 Censuses?
PS. My paternal grandfather was born 'at sea' in 1861 on board an American cargo ship of which his English father was first mate. Since this was on 'American territory' during the American Civil War it goes without saying that I've never been able to find a birth registration for him.
PPS. I lived in Ormskirk 1969-1975.
Good luck

Thank you very much for that. I have already sent for the birth certificate for Cecily Bond but it seems that the postal dispute is delaying matters at present. In this case I hope that the information on the certificate is helpful - in most cases the birth and death certificates don't seem to be nearly as much help as the marriage certificates.
I'll let you know what I get when the certificate does arrive.

Bonds of FormbySome certificates arrived today from the GRO, but not Cecily's birth certificate. However her sister's certificate states that Lilly Mary Bond was born on 15 Dec 1868 to Thomas Bond (Agricultural Labourer) and Mary Bond formerly White. So the mother of the girls was born Mary White, At Sea about 1830. However I will await the arrival of Cecily's birth certificate before I alter anything on Genes Reunited.
Using the Mary White name, I have been able to find that Thomas Bond and Mary White were married Apr-Jun 1855 in West Derby (8b/573) and I sent for the certificate today. By the end of next week I may know more.
I have spent a lot of time going through census records for 1841 and 1851 for Mary White (by 1861 she was Mrs Mary Bond) but there are over 12,000 of them and none so far line up with her birth 'At Sea'.
I received a death certificate for Mary Bond, only to find that I had boobed and got the wrong person. This Mary Bond was the widow of Richard Bond, Labourer, and died on 16 March 1897 at 7 East Street, Southport U.D. The informant was Jane Hardiman of 104, Hall Street Southport. This information may be of use to someone using this site.
The siblings of Thomas Bond included a Richard Bond 1803 but this Mary Bond may not be Thomas' sister-in-law. At some point I may follow this up.
With your help I seem to be making progress.
As soon as I have more information, I will post it.
Thank you all again for your help.

Hi Ron
The Lancashire BMD site indicates that your 1855 Thomas BOND/Mary WHITE marriage took place at Toxteth Park St James :-
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Liverpool/Toxteth/indexsj.html
There's just a chance I'll be in the vicinity of the Liverpool Record Office during the next couple of days; if I am, I'll see if I can squeeze in a quick look-up for you in the St James parish registers.

Many thanks for that. All being well (and with the co-operation of the GRO and the former GPO) I should have a copy of the marriage certificate in about 10 days' time. I am very grateful for your help but please don't go out of your way if it will be a burden.
Thanks again.

Received the birth cert. for Cicely Bond today. Note the spelling on the certificate, which differs from various Census returns where she is referred to as Cecily.
Her dob was 15 Nov 1857, place Formby. Mother is recorded as Mary Bond nee White and the father as Thomas Bond, rank/profession Husbandman. Today that would be known as a tenant farmer.
Still waiting for Thomas/Mary Bond's marriage certificate which should show their fathers' names and allow me to confirm the previous generation.

Hi All
Just received the Certified copy of an entry of marriage solemnized at St James' Church in the Parish of Walton on the Hill in the County of Lancaster. #441 April 23rd 1855 between
Thomas Bond, Bachelor, Labourer of Formby whose father was John Bond, Farmer and
Mary White, Spinster of Formby whose father was Patrick White, Farmer.
The service was performed after Banns by Hen. Hampton (I think that is the signature).
Witnesses were Edward Morris and Nancey Snelson.
So I now know the name of Mary White's father.
Hope this info is of help to others.
