Cottrill burial site

Hi.
I have a problem trying to locate where my Great grandparents would have been buried, the deaths were registered in Ormskirk.
My Great grandfather John Herbert Cottrill  (known as Herbert) bd 1859, died  1917, he was living at  64, Denmark Road, Southport, at the time of his death.  He was a Roman Catholic, where would he have likely been buried and ditto his wife Martha Alice Cottrill, died  October 1928, also in Southport.

I do not live in the UK so it is doubly difficult for me to trace things.

As far as I know St Marie's church is the only Catholic burial ground in Southport. And when I checked on the Lancashire Record Office site the burials stop in 1903.

The main cememtery is Duke Street (Southport). You could try contacting the local crematorium office who will tell you about one name for free. After that they charge £6

If it wasn't a 'church' burial then it probably took place at the RC Burial Ground on Liverpool Road (Ainsdale end)?   Not sure if that comes under the jurisdiction of the Crematorium or not - sorry if this is not helpful

Um I hadn't thought about Birkdale cemetery - one side of the road is C or E & the Catholic one is one the other. As far as I know Southport Crem have those on file.

loretogirl if you go to the main page of the forum and scroll down there is a part about cemeteries

Hi. I have emailed the crematorium, so will see if they respond.  Thanks for your help all.  Fingers crossed.

I say...

I was just too late to mention the cemetery at Sacred Heart RC church in Birkdale.

I have several look-ups in there so let me know when you have some info and I'll try to do them together.

Good hunting,

Hi again.
I just heard from the Southport Crematorium and they have given me a cemetery, plot and grave site number, they were very helpful and replied quickly to my query.

My great grandparents, John Herbert and Martha Alice COTTRILL, are buried in Duke Street Cemetery, Section P, Grave space 30.  I am not aware of the condition of the grave or who else is buried in it, if anyone.

I would love a picture of the grave and a list of the occupants, so to speak, so if anyone is heading there and could oblige I would be very grateful.  Regards Evelyn
Jane

Section P appears to be a long thin strip but no idea how large an area it is without being there

Did they say there was a headstone? Sometimes it can be so disappointing to find a space

If I was going soon I would offer but no plans I'm afraid

Hi.  Didn't say anything re. headstone.

More inofrmation

They can tell you when the plot was purchased and by whom and the address the person lived at.  They also have the information of who else is in the grave and when they were buried.

I'd give them another nudge...

or they might be the bits they charge for.....................

Yes, I gather they are.  I have a friend who lives in the area so am hoping she can go, or someone can go and see if anything standing.
