Free BMDI was surprised to learn today that someone didn't know of Free BMD. So maybe others don't either. A free to use site with the GRO indexes for birth, death & marriage. It is transcribed by volunteers and I have found it very very useful

How to use...Hi Jane
Thanks for this info for BMD. Is it the same thing as ancestry.co.uk?

1 - It is Free
2 - Ancestry isn't
3 - They are the birth, death, marriages taken from the GRO indexes - exactly the same as on Ancestry & in the little boxes in the library.
4 - You find the entry and that way you can send for the certificate
5 - But best of all is the marriages. You find your ancestry - say a man - click on the number and you get a list of all on the page. So you know one of the women is the wife. If you can then find the couple on the next census you know her maiden name

I say...I've read posts where people have said about wives on the same page and often wondered what they meant...now I know.
Will have to try them all now,

Yippee...I have often tried this site but until yesterday I have had no success.
Yesterday I used an MI from Duke Street cemetery and an obituary from the Southport Visiter...I've had a copy for 10years...and I was able to match up all but one of the seven children.
It is a fabulous site!
Dotty...deliriously happy
