Genetic Research Study by Oxford University

Take a look at this website:

http://www.peopleofthebritishisles.org/

They are taking blood samples from both male and female donors to study geographic distribution of surnames (among other things); the only criteria is that your parents and grandparents came from the same area - no problem with us Rimmers then is there?

I sent an e-mail on Sunday evening and have a reply and this afternoon spoke to Dr Susan Tonks who said she'd be delighted to have my blood! She is sending me two kits (one for myself and one for himself) and we can go to our own GP to 'donate' - she said that most GP's are happy to to their bit to help.

I couldn't see my GP doing it for free. In fact when I need blood tests they send me to the hospital.

And my lot were born in different places. And my maiden name will be all over surely - Mason.

Keep us all informed though Seacop

I have signed up for this. My GP wanted £25 so I walked into another surgery in Brighton and they said they will do it for free! Oxford Uni sent a kit through the post and they will pay a fee if required.
You need all four grandparents born in Lancs. within 25 miles of each other. I have three in Southport and one in Skem (when it was a mining village).
The bad news is you dont get to know your own results but you can receive the final report.
If the nurse can't find a vein I will regret this!

Bite the bullet, Ray, bite the bullet!   It's all in the name of research/glory (or something)

That lets me off then, one of my grandparents came from Shropshire!

And me...my father was born in Poland!

My sample is in the post and the Phlebotomist was an expert so it was pain free. No charge despite me not being a patient at the surgery (it is amazing what a bit of North Meols blarney can do)  It is a great shame that you dont get to see your own results. My wife says I have the table manners of a Viking and I was hoping to show her that I can't help it as it is in my genes.

I've just been down to Manchester Royal Infirmary to give them some of my blood.  They said they'ed pay my expenses so I thought I might as well have a day out.
Dotty

Jolly good...

Glad you managed to make a day of it...I wish I could have taken part.
