George Curzon GreenMy wifes father George Curzon Green born 1898 married to Mary Jane Lloyd. George's father being John James Green born Wigan 1856 (County Court Bailif) on 1901 census living Poulton Rd Southport. Johns father being Thomas Green born Wigan 1821 (Cooper)on 1871 census living Upper king St Southport . I believe Thomas married in 1854 to Lydia *****. Could anyone please fill in missing name, and would it be poosible to trace Thomas's parents in Wigan.I Thank you for any help with this. Alan. |

You could try searching the 1861 census for someone called Thomas green born about 1856 in Wigan - but with such a common surname..............
As Germaine says the only way to find the father's name for definite is on a certificate |

Yes you will be better getting the cert. But I have just been having a root about and this looks promising.
Thomas is a cooper ( the only Thomas I could find that was a cooper from Wigan) and he did seem to stick with the same occupation. Germaine x

Yes Green is a popular rather than common surname. Particularly in Wigan which is apparently the top location in the UK for the name. Funnily enough when I worked for Wigan Corporation (as it was then called) in the late sixties I don't recall coming across the name often. However I worked for the Housing Dept and in those days you had to show that you were an upright citizen to get a council house (how times have changed) so maybe not many Greens qualified! | ||

Is it not strange that six of the top twelve names on Jane's list are generally considered to be Welsh surnames given that the population of Wales is a fraction of that of England?

Well well Jo what a suprise and what a comprehensive reply for which I thank you. Yes very useful, filled in a few little gaps.
A few points worth mentioning : 85 Poulton Road is still occuppied by members of the Green family. I believe John James and Elizabeth had a total of 11 children three born after 1901. Which as yet not having access to the 1911 census I can only go of my wifes knowledge of her uncles and aunts. I will pm you regarding questions on the Lloyds. and Thank you once again. Alan. |

I am related to this Green family (via marriage - twice)!
Thomas Green and Lydia Rimmer (I have the marriage certificate - 6th November 1854, St Thomas' Church, Wigan) wit: Matthew Smith and Margaret Rimmer) and they had 4 children John James and Thomas - both born 1856 (presumably Thomas died) Margaret Ann 1861 Mary 1866 John James married Elizabeth Walker 1880 and had 13 children Lydia (1895-1995) married Harry Thompson Thomas William (1886) married Betsy Bridge and had 4 children): Thomas William 05.01.1916 John (marr. Isobel) Betty Margaret Thomas William (1916-28.07.1973) Funeral report available marr.
