Hello, everybody; it's nice to see a board just for Rimmers!
I have just received the will of James Rimmer or Rymer, husbandman, who died 3 Mar 1837 at Scarisbrick (age 73 when he died, so born about 1763). If anybody would like a transcription of the will then let me know.

I believe one of his sons, James (1809-1888), was my ancestor, but the will also mentions a son Gilbert whose baptism I can't see in the North Meols (St. Cuthberts) Rimmer one-name extract. According to census entries, Gilbert was born about 1795 in Birkdale, so his mother must have been James's first wife - I know James married Ann Johnson (mother of James jr) 22 Nov 1801, but I can't work out who his first wife, Gilbert's mother, was. Does anybody have any information on these people, particularly Gilbert's baptism? If he wasn't baptised at St. Cuthbert's I don't really know where to look!

Judging by the fact that James's daughter was named Margery (he also had a son John plus another son Hugh who died as a child) I think James is probably James who was baptised 3rd Jun 1764, son of Gilbert and Margery of Crossens. Does that ring a bell with anybody?

I've just come across this:

which is about Gilbert Rimmer's grandson Reginald Rimmer who emigrated to Canada. The dates given for Gilbert are slightly out, but it is definitely him, as I have been tracing various members of his family through the censuses. Does anybody know if the other info about Gilbert on there has any grain of truth in it, or would it be just one of those family legends? (The bit which says that Gilbert was the first to change the spelling of Rymer to Rimmer.)

These Rimmers are by far the grandest branch of my family so far! I wish Gilbert was my ancestor instead of a side-branch!

As you have the Rimmer one name extract you must have noticed that there are big blocks of the same spelling and then it changes to another variation. This is because a different person is writing up the entries. Sometimes the entry is written up one way but the person signs it differently.

It's the same thing with place names - spelling was only fixed when a place was surveyed by the Ordnance Survey.

As Bez says - the spelling of the name changed with the changing of the Parish Clerks! The first entry in the ONe Name Extracts is Rimmer and the second Rimer then we have Rymmer, Rymer, etc., etc. I believe them all to be the same despite some people calling themselves Rhymer, they are all Rimmers - that's what I think
