Jim,
George who was born in 1874 was George Henry. He married Annie Bowles and they had William Frederick and George Henry. They lived in Hargreaves Street before he left England for Africa. Annie remained in Southport with the children. She is listed in the 1901 census with them. She left to join George and they had another child John Edward in Rhodesia. George joined up with South African Forces to serve in 1914-18 war where he died and is buried in St Sever Cemetery in Rouen. I have his war medals as he is my great grandfather.
I have a problem with Richard. Did they make a mistake as the year of birth would match that of Michael?

Hi
Should anyone be interested, Edward MAWDSLEY's second wife was my second cousin three times removed Margaret JONES (b1840 CHS Hoose), daughter of William Wilson JONES (b1815 CHS Eastham) and Margaret SHERLOCK (b1817 CHS Great Meols).
Margaret (Jones) MAWDSLEY died in 1888 aged 48.
In the 1901 Census Edward & Margaret's grandsons William Frederick and George Henry MAWDSLEY were (along with their mother Annie) visiting Margaret's sister Ann OWEN nee JONES (b1846 CHS Hoose) and her husband Peter at 84 Lord Street, Southport.
I've been asked by a Linne Bowles Gravenstock whether I know where George MAWDSLEY & Annie BOWLES were married and precisely when they emigrated to Africa.
Can anyone help with this, please?

Haven't found Henry yet, but Annie Mawdsley, accompanied by GH and WF Mawdsley, departed from Liverpool for the Cape, South Africa on 14 Jan 1904 aboard the MEDIC (which was bound for Sydney, Australia)

Thanks to Yvonne & Jane for pointing me in the direction of the MAWDSLEY family photographs (and to Jim for submitting them to the web-site, of course).
Forum member nhengure, who posted in this thread on 31 March 2008, appears to be be blood-related to me, since according to my family tree program's relationship calculator we are 5th cousins once removed. If this person is interested in taking their great-great grandmother Margaret JONES' ancestral line back into the 1500's then please get in touch?

I am related to the MAWDSLEY family of Southport, by marriage. My father-in-law was GEORGE MAWDSLEY born 14th November 1898 to EDWARD MAWDSLEY and CLARA LAVINIA SHIPSIDES. EDWARDwas born 1865 in Formby to EDWARD MAWDSLEY and MARGARET ABRAM.
Family members from Edward and Clara emigrated to Canada and Australia.
Was so delighted to find this chat line and looking forward to reading more about this family.

My friend's husband is the 2xgt grandson of Edward and Margaret. Their son Michael had a daughter Lavinia born 3 Jan 1892. She married a Samuel Hawkshaw.
and in turn I am related through Margaret's father Thomas Abram and his first marriage.

I have looked at the photographs on the Home Page and they are fantastic.
I had put the Mawdsley family on the 'back burner' for a while but recently received an e-mail from a 'relative' who states Edward Mawdsley's son George Henry is her great grandfather - he married Annie Bowles and went out to Africa with his sons William Frederick her grandfather, -and George
I have sent her this page address and hopefully she will fill us in a bit more especially with the sailing date.

Hi Irene
Thank you for the information re Edward b1865 and Clara Lavinia SHIPSIDES, which has enabled me to identify the family in the 1891 & 1901 Censuses.
Interesting that the couple named two of their sons John - a John Edward born in 1883 and a John Henry in 1896?
Also interesting that in 1891 they had a boarder named John CLEASE (did you perhaps get Fawlty Towers on Canadian TV?).
My connection with this MAWDSLEY line is via Edward b1835's 2nd wife Margaret JONES (b1840 Hoose) whereas yours (and Yvonne's) is of course via his first wife Margaret ABRAM.
Presumably the 'relative' who e-mailed you recently is my 5th cousin nhengure who posted to this forum on 31 March 2008?

I was talking to my friend who is Lavinia's grandson. He remembers someone from Canada coming to their door looking for Lavinia, this was a good few years ago though.

Irene Mawdsley

Two daughters of Edward and Clara were sent here to Canada, Lillie in 1919,
who went to Kenora, Ontario and Isobelle who came out later and lived in
Montreal. Isobelle would likely be the one who visited.
My cousin-in-law who lives in Canada too is getting very excited about all
the information you kind folks are giving us. Thanks.
As to two Johns in one family,,,,it didn't occur to me as my mother came from Scottish parents and with their naming process often children had the same first or second given names.

More MawdsleysI am trying to sort out the confusing proliferation of Mawdsley families in this part of Lancashire. I was born in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1939 and my mother was Margaret Ellen Mawdsley b1919 to Catherine Mawdsley b1894 and an unknown father. Catherine was the eldest of 5 children born to James Mawdsley b1869 and Margaret Ellen Bond b1874. The other children of the marriage were Mary b1896, Thomas b1897, James b1898 and Cecily b1900.
During the War, as a child I accompanied my mother by train from Manchester and visited Catherine's father, living in a cottage in Formby with fruit trees at the rear, with a pig in a sty at the bottom of the garden. That single visit was my only contact with the rest of the family and until recently I was unaware of Catherine's antecedents. To the best of my knowledge, my mother and her mother, Catherine, had no contact with any of their family once they had moved to the Manchester area. I left Lancashire in 1960 and live in Essex so find it difficult to follow up enquiries in the Formby area - my wife is disabled and unable to travel.
I believe James to be one of 7 children (Isabella b1855 , Thomas b1858, Catherine b1860. Elizabeth b1863, Edward b1865, John b1867 and James b1869) born to Thomas Mawdesly b 1828 and Catherine Abraham or Abram b 1830.
However there are several Thomas Mawdsleys listed in Ancestry.co.uk searches, all from around the same area and of similar ages.
Can anyone help me sort out which one is the correct one, or even confirm that the information that I have so far is correct?
I have birth certificates for both my mother and my grandmother Catherine Mawdsley. Both are listed as having been born at premises on Liverpool Road, Formby, my mother's address is shown as Robinsons Square, Liverpool Road, Formby, Lancashire. The information about Catherine's siblings and parents came from the Census returns.
However once I move back beyond James Mawdsley, I am less certain of my ground and would appreciate some assistance in deciding which Thomas to follow.

Thank you for that Yvonne.
I am currently waiting for the marriage certificate of James Mawdsley 1869 (my greatgrandfather) and Margeret Bond 1874 which will show the occupation of his father, Thomas. I have found various Thomas's, varying from labourer, through engine driver for the Lancs & Yorks Railway to shopkeeper - all born within a year or so of each other and all in the Ormskirk district. Think that the labourer is the correct one but we shall see.

Thank you for this 'siblings' marriage, Yvonne - Thomas' brother Edward MAWDSLEY (b1835) of course marrying Catherine's sister Margaret ABRAM in Liverpool St Nicholas in 1858.
Incidentally (without wishing to appear at all pedantic) a lady can surely have only one 'nee', being the name she was born with? Would not the ABRAM girls' mother be more properly described as Catherine nee CANTWELL formerly FORMBY?

My Mawdsley family descends from Edward Mawdsley son of Edward Mawdsley and Margaret Abram, born 1865 in Formby.
Information that I have on other children of Edward and Margaret was obtained from a professional researcher giving 12 children in 16 years including two sets of twins!
Can anyone give me idea at which church in Formby these siblings would have been christened so that I can correct dates if needed.
Thanks, Irene

OK, the certificates from the GRO that I referred to last week have arrived (delay courtesy of the postal workers' dispute).
On the Birth Certificate of Margaret Ellen Bond, born 06 March 1874 in Formby, her name is given as Maggy Ellen and her mother is Cecily Bond of Formby. The space for Name and Surname of Father, and the space for Occupation of Father are both left blank. The birth was registered on 14 April 1874 by Cecily Bond, Mother and the Registrar was J. Shepherd.
According to and Entry of Marriage, on 06 June 1894, at the Church of Our Lady of Compassion, Formby, in the District of Ormskirk in the County of Lancaster the marriage took place between James Mawdsley, age 24 years, bachelor, general labourer of Liverpool Road, Formby and Margaret Ellen Bond, age 20 years, spinster also of Liverpool Road, Formby.
The father of James Mawdsley is given as Thomas Mawdsley, Railway Platelayer.
The name of Margaret Ellen Bond's father is not given (the space is struck through). The witnesses were Edward Mawdsley and Agnes Bond. The priest was Wilfrid Carr and the Registrar was J. Shepherd.
Margaret Ellen Mawdsley died on 18 September 1900 and on her Death Certificate she is shown as having died at Liverpool Road, Formby, aged 26 years. She is recorded as being the wife of James Mawdsley, General Labourer. The cause of death is certified as Puerperal Fever, 7 days after confinement, by Dr R P Sykes (I think). The death was registered on 18 September 1900 by J Mawdsley, Widower of deceased, living at Liverpool Road, Formby. The Registrar was J Carr.
I believe that Cecily Bond 1858 was the daughter of Thomas Bond abt 1813 of Formby and Mary Taylor abt 1830. I believe that they married in Q2 of 1857. According to the 1861 Census, Mary was born at sea and the 1871 Census appears to indicate that she was born in Africa but was a British Subject.
I have looked through the posts on nmfss for references to Bonds but haven't found any so far. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think you've got the right marriage for Cecily's parents. Thomas Bond was my 3rd great granduncle, and his wife Mary Taylor my third great grandaunt (in her own right). Both were born and lived in Banks, and are buried at St John's, Crossens.
From North Meols Parish Registers (on microfiche) at Lancashire Record Office, Marriages 1837 - 1857, PR 3361/1/13 extracted by SPB.

I believe you are correct and I have picked up the wrong Cecily/Cicely.
I have not got too much further with the antecedents of Margaret/Maggy Ellen Bond 1874 but spent the weekend going back through the family of Thomas Mawdsley 1827. In case the information is of use to anyone else searching the Mawdsley lines, I include my findings so far.
The Family of Thomas Mawdsley 1827
1841 According to the 1841 Census, schoolboy Thomas Mawdsley 12 is shown to be living in premises on Liverpool Road Formby, the home of his parents John Mawdsley 45, agricultural labourer and Isabela Mawdsley 40. Sharing the home were five more of Thomas Mawdsley's sons and two of his daughters. The sons were William Mawdsley 20, Richard Mawdsley 15, James Mawdsley 10, Robert Mawdsley 7 and Edward Mawdsley 5. The daughters were Mary Mawdsley 3 and Alice1 Mawdsley 1. William and Richard Mawdsley were employed as agricultural labourers. All the family was shown as having been born in Lancashire.
1851 According to the 1851 Census, Thomas Mawdsley 22 railway labourer is shown to be living in premises on Liverpool Road Formby, the home of his parents John Mawdsley 57, agricultural labourer and Isabella Mawdsley 53. Also in the home were his brothers Robert Mawdsley and Edward Mawdsley, both agricultural labourers and his schoolgirl sisters Mary Mawdsley 13 and Ellen1 Mawdsley 10. All were shown as having been born in Formby in the County of Lancaster
1861 According to the 1861 Census, Thomas Mawdsley 33 was the family head and was employed as a railway platelayer. He lived at premises on Liverpool Road, Formby with his wife Catherine Mawdsley 31, their son Thomas Mawdsley 3 and two daughters Isabella Mawdsley 6 and Catherine Mawdsley 1. All were shown as having been born in Formby in the County of Lancaster, with the sole exception of Catherine Mawdsley 31 who is recorded as having been born in Southport in the County of Lancaster.
1871 According to the 1871 Census, Thomas Mawdsley 42 was the family head and was employed as a railway labourer. He and his wife Catherine Mawdsley 41 were living at premises on Liverpool Road, Formby with four of their sons and two daughters. The sons were Thomas Mawdsley 13, John Mawdsley 6, Edward Mawdsley 4 and James Mawdsley 1. The daughters were Catherine Mawdsley 11 and Elizabeth Mawdsley 8. All were shown as having been born in Formby the County of Lancaster.
1881 According to the 1881 Census, Thomas Mawdsley 54 was the family head and was employed as a platelayer on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. He and his wife Catherine Mawdsley 52 were living at premises on Liverpool Road, Formby with 6 of their children and a grandchild. These comprised their unmarried sons Thomas Mawdsley 23 a general labourer, John 16 Mawdsley and Edward Mawdsley 14 who were fishermen and James 11, together with their unmarried daughter Elizabeth Mawdsley 18 a dressmaker. Also living there were their widowed daughter Catherine Alcock 21 working as a charwoman and their granddaughter Margaret Alcock, 1. All were shown as having been born in Formby the County of Lancaster.
1891 According to the 1891 Census, Thomas Mawdsley 63 was working as a railway labourer and living with his wife Catherine Mawdsley 63 and two sons Edward 24 and James 21 Mawdsley in a cottage on Liverpool Road, Formby. Also living with them was their married daughter Elizabeth 28, with her fisherman husband John Aindow 23 and their daughter Kate Aindow 2.
1894 James Mawdsley married Margaret Ellen Bond on 60June 1894 at the Church of our Lady of Compassion, Formby.
1894 Thomas Mawdsley died Q4.
1900 Margaret Ellen Mawdsley died 18 September 1900.
1901 According to the 1901 Census, Catherine Mawdsley 74, was widowed but still alive and living with her son James 31 at his home in Liverpool Road, Formby. James had been widowed in 1900 when his wife Margaret Ellen, nee Bond 1874, had died. Catherine Mawdsley 1827 was accompanied by Margaret Alcock who is described as the niece of the Head of the Family, James Mawdsley.
Also in the household were James' daughters Catherine 6 (my grandmother who died in 1984) and Mary 4 and his son Thomas 3. All were shown as born in Formby in the County of Lancaster with the sole exception of Catherine Mawdsley 74 who was recorded as having been born in North Meols in the County of Lancaster.
Footnotes:
1 Ellen Mawdsley and Alice Mawdsley may possibly be the same person, with the recording clerk mistaking the hand-written notes of the canvasser or the statements of the parents.
Comments and suggestions welcomed. Help with the elusive Cecily/Cicely Bond would be gratefully accepted.
Good hunting

Please note that the very first sentence of my last post, against 1841, should read ''1841 According to the 1841 Census, schoolboy Thomas Mawdsley 12 is shown to be living...'' etc. The words 'railway labourer shouldnot have been there. My apologies for any confusion - more care needed when cutting and pasting!

Hello Ron
Was the information I posted on your Cecily BOND thread in the A to D section of any use?
It's from my own extended family tree, so if you disagree with any of it I'd be grateful if you'd let me know?

Jim,
Apologies for the slowness of my response but other distractions have kept me away from the site for a few days.
Yes thank you. Knowing that Mary Taylor was not the mother of Cecily Bond allowed me to get on with searching for other women named Mary that married a Thomas Bond. You may see the results on the Cecily Bond thread.
Thank you again

Should it be of interest to nghengure (or anyone else) George Henry MAWDSELY (b1874 Southport) was 1st cousin seven times removed to this man :-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Wilson_(bishop)
Scroll down to 'Others', then select the third entry viz Thomas WILSON (bishop) (1663-1755), Bishop of Sodor and Man.
Can supply detailed information to anyone with a reasonably close family connection.
