Isn't this supposed to be easy?

A while ago I posted a message saying that I had a copy of the family bible to reference. Isn't that reliable information?

It turned out through some investigation that the bible entries for my great granddad were false. The bible states that he was born in 1851 but I have found that he (Thomas Sutton) was born in 1850. In my opinion he falsified the record so that he was born AFTER his parents got married:shock:.

Keep on diggin!

Hello Neil

What are you shocked about, that he was born outside marriage or that he lied about it?

At least you can be fairly certain who Thomas' father was, my 2nd great grandfather was born 15 years before his mother got married, I still don't know who his dad was.

It certainly doesn't seem to be that unusual for a couple to have a child before they married, or at least for the bride to be pretty heavily pregant when she got married. My great grandma must have been at least 6 months pregant with my grandma when she married.

I've heard tales (in living memory) of 50 year old women going round with cushions stuffed up their jumpers, hoping to convince the locals that any "new arrivals" were their child and not their daughter's.

In "Tracing your Ancestors" Amanda Bevan says "In the nineteenth century at least 10 per cent of marriages took place after the birth of the first child".
