John Dyott Gardnerhello,
I am looking for any information on the family of John Dyott Gardner born in St Helens in 1850. On the 1911 census he is living in Chestnut St. Southport. Also could someone let me know of the nearest church where someone in that area would possibly buried so I can take a look on my next visit to England. I assume they would be Church of England.

What sort of information about John Dyott Gardner do you want?
What sort of time for a burial? I would guess Southport Cemetery - Duke Street.

YesChestnut Street is just around the corner from Dukes Street cemetery so assuming he wasn't Catholic he could be in there.
That's a good name to research Joyce. One that is a bit unusual is always better than a 'John Smith'.

Thanks for the help on that Dotty. John Dyott Gardner is the son of John Dyott Gardner, my great, great grandad. I have a great deal of information on the family that stayed around St Helens but this particular member born 1950 died 1929 in Southport we no nothing about, though we do have a nice picture of this children. Elsie Jane married 1905 to James Tattersal, Gertrude married Thomas Unsworth 1907, Richard Greenhough, married Martha Edwards 1906, Maggie married Herbert Jeffries, and percy born 1892, do not know what happened to him. All married in Southport. Gardners were known for their music and had a band in St Helens. On the 1901 and1911 John Dyott is a musician and was wondering what happened to his children and what kind of musician John was as I am filling in the gaps on my family tree.

John DysonThe idea that Catholics are not buried in Duke Street might not be buried in Duke Street. I have good information that my Great Great Grandfather and two of his wives are buried there with one of his Mother in Laws. You may be able to contact Sefton Council, the local Council and ask them if they know where the grave is.

There are people of all denominations in Duke Street, indeed there is a Jewish section (which has it's own little building where the coffin rests before being buried); there is also a Roman Catholic Cemetery further south on Liverpool Road (almost in Ainsdale).

The Roman Catholic Cemetery is known as Birkdale RC - the opposite side of the road to Birkdale cemetery.

The Southport 1914-15 Directory shows the following:
John D Gardner, musician, 52 Chestnut St, Leigh House.
There are two James Tatersalls ( with 2 L's):
James Tattersall, dairyman, 14 Clifford Rd
James Tattersall, tram driver/motorman, 4 Sunny rd, Arncliffe, (name of house).
And two Thomas Unsworths:
Thomas Unsworth, auctioneer & valuer, 28 Chestnut St. (Probably the most likely, Gertrude near her parents)
Thomas Unsworth, baker & confectioner, 23 Liverpool Rd
Hy J Jefferies, fruiterer, poulterer & fish dealer, 659 Liverpool Rd.
No record for Richard Greenhough Gardner or Percy Gardner.

Thanks everyone with the help on the cemeteries. The Duke St. one is the most likley. I think I will take Jim's advice and try contacting Sefton Council. Thanks to bobg on the Unsworthss, yes I think they are probably in Chestnut St. I may buy a few credits for the 1911 census and see where that takes me. Percy Sarginson Gardner still remains a man of mystery!!
