John gregson b 1809Hi everyone
Im fairly new to this so apologize if i do anything wrong
I am looking for the father of a John Gregson born 1809 in the penwortham area
although i realize its not quite your area I obviously know that there are lots of gregsons near you and someone might have come across him in their own research
this is how he fits in
my grandad lewis gregson 1918
son of
joseph gregson 1888
son of
james gregson 1867
son of
james 1831
son of
John gregson 1809 who married Hannah Bradshaw in walton le dale in 1827 havent got as far as the marriage cert yet but have been told it doesnt have father details on it
i know this is a real stumbling block for me and a number of others any help or further info would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance

Hi. First of all, there will be no actual marriage certificate as they didn't come in until 1837. Before this date we have to rely on the Parish Register entries, and yes, your information is generally correct in that the registers didn't usually give father's details at that time, although there were exceptions to that rule. A lot depends on the religious denomination as to how much was recorded.
What is needed is to look at the registers and see who had a child with the same name and then have a look at "naming patterns". Wills and burial registers can also provide clues as to family members.
The biggest problem is with the same common first names being repeated in many different family groups.
Good Luck.

I would think a trip to Lancashire Record Office is in order (that's if you can get there)?

Went to LRO today but didn't feel so good and left earlier than intended, however:
29.10.1827 - Parochial Chapel of Walton le Dale, by Banns
John X Gregson married Hannah X Bradshaw
by Rendle H Fielden, Curate
Witnesses: William Wilson and James Tomlison
Couldn't get access to the original records and the Lancashire Parish Register Society copy said they were married 11.11.1827?
Keep reminding me and I'll have a look for John's birth next time

Names, dates, anything you have...do you live locally? Maybe we already know this..but I'm a dozy bovine!
Bring it on girl!!!

That's a case of searching parish records for their baptisms. Not easy with that surname. Maybe census inforamtion gives you a clue as to where they were born so leads onto the parish to look in.
Have you tried the IGI? That is always worth looking at - then you can look at the parish record to make sure the information is correct.
Parish records for Lancashire are held at the Lancashire Record Office in Preston.

Good stuffThat just the info we need but as you're in touch with seacop then she'll know what's what.
Are you a member of the society? There are several members who do free lookups for members so it's alway worth considering...
